Nursery at Fairfield Primary School

A nursery day with its own timetable, inside a primary school: Fairfield’s provision combines an early years start with access to the school’s support structure. It serves children aged three and four at Gallowbarrow in Cockermouth. The nursery admission number is 32 full-time equivalent places, a capacity measure rather than a count of children attending.
The distinction between nursery and school matters here. Nursery hours run separately from those of older pupils, while the early years team and special educational needs coordinator work together over children’s additional needs.
The nursery operates from 09:00 to 15:00, with doors opening at 08:45. Those separate timings give families a clear daily planning point.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers language and communication, physical development and children’s social and emotional development, alongside literacy and mathematics. These are foundations for learning as well as growing independence. In September 2023, Ofsted described an engaging early years learning environment and activities that prepared children for later classroom demands.
Early reading support. The same inspection identified delays in tackling phonics gaps for some children at the earliest reading stages across the school. Some advanced before their knowledge was secure, limiting their achievement. This was a school-level concern, rather than a finding attributed specifically to nursery children.
Settling support can be adapted for children with additional needs. The early years lead coordinates with the special educational needs coordinator (SENDCo) to arrange enhanced transition periods and support in Nursery and Reception. Staff also exchange information with families and other early years settings, helping a child’s needs remain part of the conversation when they move.
For children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), early years reviews take place every six months. SEN Support reviews happen at least three times a year, with parents contributing to plans. That gives families recurring opportunities to discuss support and next steps.
Personal care is planned with parents where a child needs assistance. Medication arrangements involve a Health Care Plan agreed with the family. Within the wider school, a purpose-built Sensory Room provides a space for managing sensory needs and practising emotional regulation; it should be understood as a school facility rather than a nursery room.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer admissions priority. Families must make a separate application through Cumberland Council’s Common Application Form and meet the normal Reception application deadline. For September 2027 entry, applications can be submitted online or by post.
Familiarity is a separate benefit from entitlement. Fairfield believes nursery children gain confidence from knowing the school’s adults and surroundings. Enhanced transition support for children with additional needs addresses preparation, not the allocation of places.
Children aged three and four qualify for up to 15 funded hours each week from the term following their third birthday. Some may qualify for an additional 15 hours; parents apply for that additional funding through Childcare Choices.
