Nursery at Holmwood House School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. At a Glance

Woodland play and two distinct bases give Holmwood House’s nursery provision its character. Great Horkesley takes children aged six months to four years, with three acres of woodland, gardens and a paddock. At Lexden, children aged two to four attend the nursery on the school campus, previously called Preschool. The choice changes both the journey and the surroundings.

In January 2026, the registered nursery provision across the two sites had 108 places. This is the school’s early childhood provision, with a shared nursery leader whose qualification is a Level 4 NVQ in Childcare.

The Nursery Day

Play connects learning with things children can touch, move and investigate. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers seven learning areas; here, practical experiences bring language, early mathematics and physical development together. At the January 2026 early years inspection, younger children explored rice, pasta and lentils, filling containers while using words about quantity and weight. Handling materials gives early number language a concrete meaning.

Older children’s construction play included choosing protective equipment after learning about electricians. Outdoors, tree climbing develops physical confidence; indoors, large boxes become painted dinosaurs, combining imaginative play with experiments in mixing colours. Babies have sensory activities and time to investigate at their own pace. Learning changes with development.

The surroundings differ by site. Great Horkesley’s woodland and gardens make outdoor exploration a substantial part of the offer. At Lexden, nursery children have outdoor play areas and access to the school library, sports hall and indoor pool. Specialist teaching includes swimming, music and French. Monster Phonics is used from Preschool, introducing the relationship between spoken sounds and letters.

Care and Support

Settling Days are offered to nursery children after acceptance of a place, giving them time to become familiar with their new setting before starting. Key person relationships support babies’ and younger children’s emotional security. Staff exchange information with parents about feeding, sleep and feelings, adapting care when family circumstances change. Sleep arrangements follow individual routines and safe-sleep guidance.

Support is practical as well as emotional. In January 2026, children with additional needs received adaptations to activities, routines and their surroundings. Footstools and adjusted seating helped children eat independently alongside their peers; focused individual sessions addressed skills such as communication or hand control. Work with families and external professionals helps keep that support coordinated.

Meals also provide opportunities to practise independence. Adults supervise closely and help children use cutlery, make choices and try unfamiliar foods. Full Day bookings include snacks and breakfast, lunch and tea; the shorter School Day meal arrangements differ between sites.

Understanding healthy choices. In January 2026, inspectors identified inconsistent explanations of why healthy food benefits children. Families should weigh that specific teaching improvement alongside the attentive meal supervision and individual care routines.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Existing nursery families should confirm Reception application requirements with the school’s Admissions Team. For applicants, the registration route is through that team; Reception entry involves requests for a current report, an Early Years Profile where applicable, and a reference from the child’s existing school or nursery.

Preparation for the change is a separate matter. Children who have accepted a school offer are invited to a June Transition Day. Familiarity with school spaces and support between stages can help children prepare emotionally; it should not be treated as an admissions entitlement.

Practical Information

Both sites offer a Full Day from 8am to 6pm. School Day hours differ: Great Horkesley runs from 8.30am to 4pm, while Colchester runs from 8am to 3.30pm. A minimum booking of two days each week applies at either site.

Full Year attendance covers 47 weeks. Term Time Only attendance covers 38 weeks at Great Horkesley and 35 at Colchester. Both nurseries close for five weeks plus bank holidays, so childcare planning needs to accommodate those closures.

Funded hours are offered, with eligibility and operating hours handled individually. Consumables are charged separately during funded hours and itemised on invoices. Parents can opt out and supply the relevant items each day, although some enrichment activities may then be excluded. Ask the school for current charges.

For nursery enquiries, email nurserymanager@holmwood.house or call 01206 273827. Personal tours can be booked through the enquiry form or on 01206 673750, allowing families to consider the setting before choosing a booking pattern.
