At a Glance

Stories shared daily and a Monday library visit give Woodpeckers a recognisable rhythm. This is the nursery class within St Michael's Primary School and Nursery, Colchester, welcoming children from age 3. It occupies its own room within the school's early years setting, alongside a separate Reception room.

Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 14 and 15 January 2025. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Language gets sustained attention here. In January 2025, nursery children developed their listening through everyday sounds, rhymes, songs and stories; the emphasis on spoken language prepared them well for later phonics. Talk Boost adds a named programme to that work. During autumn 2025, sessions combined a story, song and activity with Tizzy the tiger, helping children practise listening and speaking. Picture sequences also helped them construct sentences.

The Early Years Foundation Stage brings together communication, physical development, relationships and early learning through practical experiences. In Woodpeckers, that means turn-taking games, counting songs, exploring shapes and making marks. During autumn 2025, children recognised small quantities up to 3, created patterned wrapping paper and retold Lost and Found through story maps and their own versions. These are concrete routes into number, pattern and storytelling.

Movement supports early writing, too. Dough Disco uses music and dough movements to exercise fingers, while Squiggle Whilst You Wiggle links large movements with marks on paper. Nursery activities have included threading, sensory trays and a vintage typewriter, giving children different ways to practise hand control.

Outdoors is part of the routine in every weather. During autumn 2025, Forest Fun Friday involved exploring the natural world, and nursery children practised jumping, running and scooter riding outside. Monday library visits bring a chosen book home to share; Thursday is nursery PE day. Books and movement both have regular slots.

Care and Support

Settling includes adult help with separation from a main carer, learning the nursery's routines and talking about feelings. Turn-taking games give children opportunities to practise sharing while becoming familiar with group life.

For additional needs, the school's SENCO works with families, teachers and specialist services on individual targets and interventions. Parents can raise speech or language concerns through senco@stmichaelsprimary.co.uk. A shower is housed in the nursery classroom, a practical care facility within the learning space.

Communication includes Class Dojo messages and shared learning experiences. Parents' evenings take place in autumn, spring and summer, giving families recurring opportunities to discuss progress. The school also has its own kitchen: cooked lunches include a vegetarian choice, with fruit and salads available. Its nut-free arrangements require families to keep nut products out of lunchboxes.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Essex County Council, usually online; nursery applications go directly to the school office.

There is a specific, conditional admissions advantage. Nursery children who qualify for service premium fall within the third oversubscription category, following looked-after or previously looked-after children and applicants with a sibling at the school. This is priority for that eligible group, not a promise of admission or priority for every nursery child. Families should keep the application process separate from their child's familiar nursery routines.

Practical Information

Woodpeckers has a morning session from 8.40am to 11.40am and an afternoon session from 12.20pm to 3.20pm. These are the nursery's hours, so they are the useful times for planning collection and other commitments.

Leave named wellington boots at school and send a coat suited to the weather each day. On Thursdays, children attend in PE kit: a house-colour T-shirt with red shorts, or jogging bottoms in colder weather, and trainers or plimsolls. Jewellery stays at home. Label clothing and other belongings.

Nursery applications are handled by the school office, which can be reached on 01206 546412 or office@st-michaels.essex.sch.uk. Families can also arrange a school visit through the office.
