Play shaped around children’s interests gives this pre-school its starting point. Adults plan themed activities, then build in opportunities for each child to practise their next steps. There is a framework behind the play, rather than a single task for everyone.
Children can join from age two. The provision belongs to St Peter’s Church of England primary school and occupies the same site in Coggeshall. Its connection to the school also extends to additional-needs support: the school’s special educational needs coordinator works with the pre-school teacher and staff, allowing concerns to be identified early.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guides learning and care here. For parents, that means attention to how children communicate, move, manage feelings and build relationships, alongside early reading, number work, creativity and discovering the world around them. These strands connect. Learning is broader than preparing to read or count.
Adult-led activities often take a theme, but children’s own interests also influence planning. Staff consider individual learning goals and create play opportunities to develop them. That gives a child’s next step a practical place in the day, rather than treating development as the same sequence at the same speed for everyone.
Early phonics begins in Nursery/Reception through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. This introduces the relationship between sounds and written letters as children build towards reading and spelling. In March 2023, early-years children received help with reading from the youngest ages, with books matched to their existing sound knowledge. The useful implication is a connection between what children have learned and what they are asked to read.
In March 2023, children in the early years became comfortable with school life quickly and developed greater independence and confidence in trying things. Positive behaviour routines also began in the early years, giving children a consistent introduction to expectations.
For children with additional needs, support starts within the pre-school team’s work with the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO). The coordinator is a qualified teacher, holds the National Award for SEN Coordination gained in 2014 and works three days per week. Families can contact this role through the school office.
Talk Boost is available for identified children in pre-school, EYFS and Key Stage 1 when required. It sits alongside the early identification of concerns, so families have a named intervention to discuss when planning support. Across the school, facilities include a disabled toilet, and specialist resources are used following professional advice. These are shared school arrangements rather than a description of a separate nursery room.
Attending the pre-school does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through the local authority; for residents of the Essex County Council area, excluding Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock, that means Essex County Council. Applications are considered against the school’s admission criteria.
For September 2026 entry, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is past. Nursery attendance and the Reception application remain separate decisions.
Transition support is a different matter. The pre-school staff and SENCO work together on additional needs before children start school, supporting continuity into Reception. The school also organises activities before children begin and works with other local nurseries on transition throughout the year. Familiarity helps preparation; it does not reserve a place.
The school office handles pre-school enquiries. Contact 01376 561328 or admin@st-peterscofe.essex.sch.uk; visits can also be arranged through the office. The address is Myneer Park, Coggeshall, Colchester, Essex CO6 1YU.
