Nursery at Unity Primary Academy

Language and learning together give Unity’s early years provision its character. In June 2025, children were developing the ability to tackle problems with others, sustain their attention and keep trying. For parents, that means looking beyond early reading alone: independence and communication matter here too.
The nursery belongs to Unity Primary Academy in Greenstead, Colchester. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 10 and 11 June 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. A proposed provision for two-year-olds is the subject of a consultation about a possible opening.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) has a clear emphasis on communication here. In June 2025, staff’s understanding of children’s development shaped the curriculum, and children approached their learning eagerly. Working through problems together gave them practice in concentrating, acting independently and persisting. These are useful foundations for taking part in learning with other children.
Read, Write Inc is used daily across EYFS for early reading. Alongside the communication emphasis, this gives early literacy a named teaching approach. The school also recommends Tiny Happy People for communication activities and Hungry Little Minds for simple play ideas at home, giving families practical ways to continue that focus beyond the session.
The wider school grounds include a Miyawaki Forest and outdoor learning spaces. These are distinctive physical features of the school setting. Unity also has a Community Kitchen, created from its former school kitchen, with commercial catering equipment and a separate entrance for community use. Its purpose is food education, linking the school with families and the surrounding community.
Helping children manage their feelings is part of the school’s approach. Talking for a Purpose includes adults managing their own responses first, then helping children regulate theirs. The school aims for children eventually to manage themselves independently. This gives parents a useful picture of the adult role when a child needs help with emotions or behaviour.
For special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), Unity aims to reduce barriers to participation and develop children’s independence. Parents can contact the SENCO with questions, providing a direct route for discussing additional needs. Across the school, family support includes a Family Liaison Officer and coffee mornings.
Child protection concerns go to the safeguarding team and Child Protection Officer. A designated safeguarding lead is on site at all times, giving families an identified point of contact for concerns about a child’s safety.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Essex coordinates the school’s normal Reception admissions round. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions, and submit the Reception application by the normal deadline.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 01206 864226 or use the school’s enquiry form. Unity is on Hickory Avenue in Greenstead, Colchester, CO4 3QJ. The office provides a direct starting point for families considering the nursery.
