Water experiments, folding materials and learning about the local area give Bacon Garth's early years provision a practical character. The nursery is known as FS1, or Foundation Stage 1, and forms part of Bacon Garth Primary School in Cottingham. A Foundation Stage team sits within the school's staffing structure.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 18 and 19 June 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
The Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS, brings together early learning and children's personal development. At Bacon Garth, the June 2024 findings show what that means in practice across early years: developing language, understanding numbers and learning to work alongside other children. These are foundations for both learning and taking part in a group.
Adults introduce unfamiliar words and encourage children to use them to explain their ideas. Early reading and phonics made a quick start in June 2024, while mathematics developed children's grasp of numbers and patterns that repeat. For parents, the useful connection is between learning something new and being able to talk about it.
Practical investigation has a place too. In June 2024, children concentrated closely on an experiment that changed the slope to explore how water moved. Folding and connecting materials developed early making skills, while learning about the surrounding area introduced ideas about the past. These examples give children something concrete to test, make or discuss. They connect early concepts with direct experience.
Relationships and independence are part of the learning. The June 2024 early years findings linked growing self-reliance with social development: children tackled new challenges with persistence while adults helped them learn to cooperate and get along. For a young child, those habits matter alongside early reading and number work: participating, trying again and getting along with others are part of the day.
For special educational needs concerns, parents can contact the school's Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator. The school caters for children with physical disabilities and learning disabilities, including significant needs. This provides a clear starting point for discussing a child's support.
Safeguarding concerns go to the designated child protection team, with a written Record of Concern following the discussion. The procedure gives parents a direct way to raise worries about a child.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat choosing FS1 and applying for Reception as two separate decisions, keeping the application step in your plans even while your child attends the nursery.
Breakfast Club accepts FS1 children, which may help families needing care before the nursery session. After-school provision is for FS2 through to Year 6, so its age coverage differs from the breakfast offer.
