Language comes first at Edgewick’s nursery: vocabulary, social development and early number work give its half-day provision a clear educational focus. There are 26 nursery places each year within Edgewick Community Primary School, on Cross Road in Coventry.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 21 and 22 March 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
In March 2023, early learning combined developing English with learning about numbers and the surrounding world. For parents, this gives a concrete sense of the educational emphasis: children develop ways to communicate alongside the beginnings of mathematical understanding and social skills.
Creative work adds another dimension. The 2022/23 curriculum progression sets out early years activities involving collage, printing, drawing and textiles. That progression listed torn-paper collage, printing with stamps and threading as early years activities. Such activities give children practical ways to explore materials while developing hand control.
Visual support forms part of the school’s classroom approach. Picture timetables and InPrint visuals help make the sequence of the day visible. The school also has a sensory room that children can use when needed. These school-wide resources sit alongside The Hub, a specialist classroom serving early years and younger primary children with more complex needs; its activities focus on attention and early communication.
Settling can be gradual for children who need additional support. Under the school’s SEND starting arrangements, the teacher meets the child and family, children can see their classroom, and an enhanced induction can build attendance up slowly. This allows the start to be adjusted to the child rather than requiring an immediate jump to the full session.
Parents have a defined part in planning additional help. A SEND Concern Form is completed jointly with the teacher, and early years targets use Bubbles, reviewed each term. The process gives families specific goals to discuss and a point at which support can be reconsidered.
The SEND Information Report also identifies SEND Early Years support for children aged 0–5, alongside speech and language therapy. Within school, the Wellbeing Team can work individually or with small groups, and Play Therapy is available for children needing extra help. Parents’ first contact about SEND is their child’s class teacher.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Coventry City Council’s normal school admissions route.
For the past application cycle opening in September 2025, the advertised closing date was 15 January 2026. Treat that as a dated cycle, rather than a future deadline. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions; familiarity with the school does not remove the need to apply again.
Half-day attendance is the nursery session model. For enquiries or a school tour, contact the office on 02476 686893 or email info@edgewick.coventry.sch.uk.
Clothing. The uniform page, headed 2022/23, exempts nursery children from needing a PE kit. It also asks families to label clothing, a useful practical step when preparing belongings for nursery.
