Early reading gives this Catholic nursery a clear educational starting point. At the Ofsted inspection on 25 and 26 January 2022, phonics teaching in Nursery was good, and early years provision received a Good judgement. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Good Shepherd's nursery sits within the primary school on Spring Road in Coventry. For the school year beginning September 2026, its admission limit is 52 places, divided into 26 morning and 26 afternoon places, with limited provision for children eligible for the extended funded entitlement. Children start from age three. September is the main intake, with January and April entry dependent on remaining places.
A morning or afternoon session gives children a three-hour nursery day. Phonics provides an introduction to the sounds used in reading: the January 2022 finding gives parents a specific indication of the teaching children encountered, rather than a general claim about school performance.
The early years area connects to the main playground by a ramp. In January 2026, this had a handrail on only one side, with further handrails recommended. Families whose children need mobility support should factor that physical arrangement into planning their nursery day.
Support for additional needs starts with a conversation with the SENCO, the school's special educational needs coordinator. Parents are asked to share their child's needs so that staff and families can plan nursery provision together. Special educational needs are not grounds for refusing a nursery place.
For children receiving SEND support, the school uses a cycle of assessment, planning, support and review. Plans are reconsidered each term with parents involved, giving families a regular opportunity to discuss adjustments and next steps.
Lunch needs its own arrangement for children staying across the day. Parents using a 30-hour place can choose a charged school dinner, paid through Arbor. The school also distributes a Friday update through Arbor, helping families keep track of school activities and events.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives admission priority. Parents must make a separate application, with nursery children considered against the same criteria as other applicants. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
For September 2027 entry, apply through the admissions process of the local authority where you live, naming Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School. The deadline is 15 January 2027. Coventry families use Coventry City Council's primary admissions route.
Morning sessions run from 8:30am to 11:30am; afternoons run from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. The nursery expects attendance across Monday to Friday, although requests to split funded entitlement receive equal consideration.
The 30-hour all-day arrangement runs from 8:30am to 2:30pm, with a charged option to stay until 3:30pm. Staying at lunchtime also involves a separate optional lunchtime care charge, payable monthly; this care is withdrawn if payment is not made. Places are limited. Parents must obtain an eligible funding code before the term of entry and renew it every three months; without an eligible code, provision returns to the universal 15 hours. Ask the school for current charges.
Uniform is a parental choice. Nursery applications go directly to the school using its online form, and enquiries can be made through the school office on 02476689392. School visits can be arranged by appointment.
