At a Glance

Scooters, trikes and a climbing frame give Moat House’s nursery a clear physical character, alongside stories, creative work and learning through play. This is the nursery within Moat House Primary School on Deedmore Road in Coventry. Children must have turned three before their starting term.

Morning, afternoon and 30-hour places offer different lengths of nursery day. The early years provision received a Good judgement at the Ofsted inspection on 14 and 15 January 2025. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

Play and short teaching inputs shape the learning. Nursery children have daily teaching linked to different curriculum areas; phonics begins with hearing sounds, imitating them and recognising differences. This gives listening a practical purpose before children tackle more formal reading.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together language, relationships, physical skills, literacy, maths, creativity and understanding the world. Here, practical maths involves investigating numbers, measures and shapes, while stories and rhymes encourage children to speak, listen and ask questions. Children’s interests help shape reading and writing activities.

Children can move between outdoor and indoor learning areas. Scissors and mark making exercise smaller hand movements; the climbing frame, trikes and scooters give larger movements their own space. Creative areas inside and outside allow children to explore materials and imaginative play. Outdoor learning continues in different weather, so spare clothes, wellies and waterproofs have a practical role.

Independent learning. In January 2025, children had too few chances to use newly taught learning independently in some curriculum areas. Support for pencil grip was also inconsistent, limiting progress. These are useful points to discuss when considering how adults help children practise skills during play.

Care and Support

Settling starts with contact between home and nursery. For the 2025-2026 intake, home visits preceded shorter introductory sessions, with parents staying for the first play session. Staff offered flexibility during the initial weeks. In January 2025, early years children adjusted successfully to routines, and staff used parents’ knowledge to understand children’s existing skills. Learning also included handwashing and dental hygiene.

Teaching assistants support the nursery team. For children with additional learning needs, staff work with families and the SEND coordinator, drawing on Speech and Language Therapy or Play Therapists where needed. That gives parents a route for discussing support alongside everyday classroom care.

Food arrangements are straightforward: children attending 30-hour places bring a healthy packed lunch and a named drink. Lunches and snacks from home must contain no nuts, and families should share dietary requirements. Fruit or another healthy snack accompanies milk or water each day; drinking water is accessible throughout the day.

My Child at School (MCAS) carries school communications. Parents’ evenings take place twice a year, and families can contribute to physical and online learning journals. This makes communication more than a termly conversation: parents can add experiences from home as well as respond to nursery learning.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal school admissions process, administered by Coventry City Council, and meet the applicable Reception deadline. Applications go through Coventry’s admissions service at www.coventry.gov.uk/admissions. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoons run from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. The 30-hour places run from 8:45am to 3:15pm. Nursery applications begin with a form collected from the school office; the school then contacts families about availability and a start date. Visits before applying are welcome.

Uniform combines a royal blue cardigan or sweatshirt with a white polo shirt, grey or black bottoms and black shoes. Label clothing and bring spares, with nappies and wipes where appropriate. At collection, parents wait behind the Early Years Fence while children are handed over individually. Tell the office or teacher in advance if another adult will collect your child.
