Nursery at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School

Counting beyond maths activities and solving problems together give Sacred Heart’s early years provision its character. Learning has a practical purpose, with physical development and relationships woven into the activities children undertake.
The nursery belongs to Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School on Brays Lane in Coventry. Children join in September after their third birthday, in the year before starting school. For September 2026, the nursery admission number is 52, with limited places for the 30-hour option. The school has a Catholic ethos and asks families to respect it; families of other faiths can also apply.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 7 and 8 May 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection.
Practical activity gives the early years curriculum its shape. In May 2025, children explored their surroundings creatively, tackled problems collaboratively and practised counting outside dedicated maths activities. The point for parents is that learning is connected: number skills are used during other tasks, rather than confined to a single lesson.
Physical development receives attention too. Children practise both larger movements and the smaller movements that require hand control. Outdoor resources support their learning needs, making the outside environment part of the educational provision. The nursery has its own building and garden area on the school site.
Morning and afternoon places each provide a 15-hour pattern. The all-day option provides 30 hours, with lunch included in the day and an optional additional hour afterwards. These patterns give families a choice between shorter sessions and a longer nursery day.
Relationships help children settle. In May 2025, early years staff learnt about children promptly and developed caring connections that helped them feel safe, including children beginning education for the first time and those arriving with communication difficulties.
For children with special educational needs, families should involve the Inclusion Leader so that provision can be planned around their child. Special educational needs alone will not lead to refusal of a nursery place. Across the school, teachers, the SENCO and the Raising Standards Leader discuss SEND progress each term, providing a regular opportunity to reconsider support.
Parents can arrange a teacher meeting through the administration team or contact staff by email. Children attending all day can have a charged school meal or bring a packed lunch, giving families a choice about lunchtime food.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives admission priority. A separate application is required, and nursery children are assessed against the same oversubscription criteria as other applicants. Families should therefore plan for Reception admission separately from their nursery arrangements.
For entry in September 2027, apply through the school admissions process of the local authority where you live, naming Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School. The deadline is 15th January 2027. Applications for a baptised Catholic child require a baptismal certificate alongside the application.
Morning Nursery runs from 8:30am to 11:30am. All day Nursery runs from 8:30am to 2:30pm, with charged wraparound from 2:30pm to 3:30pm if needed. Afternoon Nursery finishes at 3:30pm. Attendance is expected across all five sessions, Monday to Friday.
Families splitting their funded entitlement with another setting receive equal consideration. Taking the full entitlement at the school nursery means that nursery education funding cannot also be used at the other setting. For enquiries, contact the school office on 02476 453314 or email admin.sh@romeromac.com; refer to the school for current meal and wraparound charges.
Children enter in September following their third birthday, in the year before starting school. There is one September intake, with later vacancies allocated through the nursery admissions process.
There are 15-hour morning and afternoon places, plus limited 30-hour all-day places. Morning sessions run from 8:30am to 11:30am; all-day sessions run from 8:30am to 2:30pm, with optional charged wraparound until 3:30pm.
Yes. Children attending all day can bring lunch from home instead of having a charged school meal.
No. Nursery attendance gives neither a guaranteed place nor priority. Families must submit a separate Reception application through their home local authority; for September 2027 entry, the deadline is 15th January 2027.
Speak to the class teacher and involve the Inclusion Leader in planning nursery provision. A nursery place will not be refused because a child has special educational needs.
