Nursery at St Gregory's Catholic Primary School

Three nursery patterns give families a choice between mornings, afternoons and a longer day at St Gregory's Catholic Primary School in Coventry. This is the school's own nursery, within a Catholic setting on Harry Rose Road. Families of other faiths may also apply; the school asks parents to respect its Catholic ethos.
The nursery is now accepting children approaching their third birthday. For the September 2025 nursery intake, the admission limit was 52 places, divided into 26 morning and 26 afternoon places, including provision for children attending for 30 hours. The 2025–2026 entry pattern allowed starts in September, January or April after a child's third birthday, subject to space.
Play gives the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) its shape. Children choose some activities themselves, while adults guide others, using children's interests and developmental needs to plan learning. For parents, that means play has a purpose: building conversation, relationships and confidence alongside new skills.
The framework brings together movement, language and emotional development with early mathematics, literacy, creative expression and discovering how the world works. Literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and creative activities build on children's language, physical, social and emotional development. Tapestry records children's learning through photographs, observations and staff comments, giving families examples of what their child is doing.
In September 2023, Ofsted found that early-years children settled successfully through staff working with families, and described children practising sharing and turn-taking, enjoying rhymes and songs, and counting together. These activities give a concrete picture of the early-years experience: learning to participate with other children alongside developing language and number skills. A book given to children also helped connect reading at home with school.
Within the EYFS framework, a key person works with parents and exchanges information about their child. Tapestry adds a practical link between home and nursery: parents can view learning records and contribute photographs of experiences or celebrations at home. This makes communication a two-way exchange.
For children staying through lunch, families can choose a school meal or send a packed lunch. Parents provide details of allergies, intolerances and other dietary needs, and consent is required for food-tasting activities. Permission is also sought for personal care assistance, including toileting, changing clothes and feeding, so families can communicate care needs before attendance.
The Inclusion Leader is the contact for planning provision for a nursery child with special educational needs. Those needs do not prevent admission. At school level in September 2023, some children experienced delays in getting specialist SEND help, and early-reading teaching had inconsistencies that reduced opportunities to practise sounds. These were school-wide concerns, rather than separate nursery judgements, but they matter when discussing support and early learning.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives priority. Children who attend nursery are considered against the same oversubscription criteria as other applicants. Treat nursery and Reception as separate applications.
For September 2027 Reception entry, families must apply through their home local authority's school admissions process, naming St Gregory's, by 15 January 2027. A baptismal certificate must accompany an application for a baptised Catholic child. The practical implication is clear: accepting a nursery place does not replace completing the Reception application on time.
Morning nursery runs from 8:30am to 11:30am; the afternoon session runs from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. The 2025–2026 arrangements also provided an all-day pattern from 8:30am to 2:30pm for 30-hour places, with a charged extra hour extending attendance to 3:30pm. Attendance across Monday to Friday was expected.
Funding eligibility is checked before admission, and families complete an Early Years Funding Agreement. A 30-hour code is required for the all-day pattern. Families sharing their entitlement with another setting receive equal consideration, but using the full entitlement here prevents funding being claimed at that other setting.
Limited nursery Care Club spaces extend the day. The 2025–2026 arrangements offered morning care from 7:30am to 8:30am and afternoon options ending at 4:30pm or 5:30pm, both starting at 3:30pm. Book through Arbor in advance, with the Care Club account in credit. Meals, additional hours and wraparound care can involve charges; contact the school for current charges.
