Boxing Clever storytelling and maths stories give Stanton Bridge’s early years provision a distinctive thread: language and numbers are developed alongside learning to share and take turns. The nursery belongs to Stanton Bridge Primary School on Oliver Street in Coventry and forms part of its Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision. This is a school nursery with access to the school’s wider support structure.
An EYFS manager sits within that structure, alongside room leaders and a teaching assistant. For families, the useful connection is between early learning, communication with home and specialist support when a child needs it.
The EYFS brings care and learning together for children from birth to five. Here, the early years curriculum combines mathematical development and early literacy with speaking, listening and relationships. Learning to wait for a turn or share with another child belongs alongside developing reading and writing skills.
Early years learning takes place in indoor and outdoor environments. The school aims to use this provision to develop independent thinking, creativity and the ability to solve problems. Its early years approaches include phonics through RWInc, storytelling through Boxing Clever and maths stories. These give families concrete starting points for understanding the learning their child encounters.
Learning can continue at home through parent workshops covering early reading, playful maths and understanding the EYFS. These connect classroom learning with activities parents can use themselves, rather than leaving families to work out how to help.
Evidence Me connects parents with early years learning through photographs, progress updates and messages. Parents can also speak directly with the team, attend meetings about progress and receive an annual report. That creates several ways to discuss a child’s development, from an everyday question to a fuller conversation.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school uses Assess, Plan, Do, Review. Teachers and the SENCo involve parents in identifying needs and reviewing support, with external professionals brought in when needed. EYFS Ranges and PIVATS help staff track smaller steps for children developing below age expectations. Support tools across the school include ear defenders, visual timetables and timers.
Starting arrangements can be adapted to individual needs. Depending on the child, support may include visits before starting and a temporary part-time timetable where parents agree and it would help. The school also has a hygiene suite and adapted toilets. For complex medical needs, staff work with families and health professionals on an individual healthcare plan; the school can usually help administer medication, but parents must speak to the office or class teacher and complete the relevant paperwork.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal primary admissions route via Coventry City Council, meeting the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a separate task from arranging nursery attendance.
Transition support is a different matter. Children with SEND can receive additional planning and resources for starting Reception. For children with complex needs or global delays, support includes meeting their next teacher, visiting the new classroom and taking home a booklet with photographs to build familiarity.
Nursery applications let families express a preference for Morning (AM), Afternoon (PM) or either session. The form also gathers dietary requirements, allergies, health concerns and details of outside agencies supporting the child, giving families an opportunity to explain practical needs from the outset.
School tours can be arranged before applying. For enquiries, contact the office on 024 7668 8992 or email admin@stantonbridge.coventry.sch.uk.
