Nursery at Wyken Croft Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Play has a planned purpose at Wyken Croft: early years teachers and practitioners shape sessions around children’s interests. The school’s nursery provision covers ages two to four, with Wyken Nursery and Phoenix Nursery named in its welcome booklet. This is an introduction to school through play, conversation and growing independence.

At the Ofsted inspection on 5 and 6 November 2024, early years provision was graded Good within the school inspection. That judgement covers the early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together physical development, communication, relationships and early learning. Here, that means learning to express an idea, handle tools, explore numbers and cooperate during play. Structured sessions give adults a role in extending children’s interests rather than simply providing activities.

Word Aware gives vocabulary a specific place in the nursery curriculum. The Spring 1 curriculum letter describes introducing a theme-related word each day and encouraging children to try the vocabulary in sentences and play. Stories also become something to investigate: children consider what a title or picture might tell them and suggest what could happen next. Marks made with crayons and pencils are given meaning, connecting early writing to children’s own ideas.

Counting involves matching numbers to objects and understanding that the last number counted represents the quantity. Imaginative play lets children contribute their own ideas alongside others. These are practical ways to develop language and mathematical understanding.

Outdoor movement matters too. In November 2024, children developed balance and strength outside, sustained their involvement in activities and became more able to work together. The 2021–2022 welcome booklet describes a large outdoor area accessible throughout sessions in different weather. The accessibility plan adds a concrete detail: early years outdoor areas have broad doorways and ramp access, useful features for families considering physical access.

Care and Support

Language and emotional development receive attention together. In November 2024, early years children who began with substantial communication difficulties received help to express their needs and manage feelings. Listening to instructions and participating for longer were part of their increasing readiness to learn.

The 2021–2022 nursery booklet sets out a key person allocation during a child’s first half term. It also describes daily conversations with parents, termly parent meetings and learning records through Tapestry. Together, these give families a familiar adult contact and ways to discuss development beyond collection time.

Food offers another opportunity for independence. The same booklet describes a self-service snack bar where children select fruit and pour milk or water. Phoenix Nursery’s lunch arrangements included either a packed lunch or a hot meal. The booklet also identifies the setting as nut free and asks families to avoid bringing separate snacks because of allergy risks.

Medical Tracker was introduced for email recording and notifications from September 2026, covering medicine administration and first aid. Phone calls remain part of the procedure for head injuries or incidents needing further checks. Parents should keep their contact email accurate so these messages reach them.

Moving On to Reception

A separate application. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Wyken Croft. Families must apply again through the normal primary admissions process and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year. The school directs applications to Coventry City Council’s admissions service.

The council’s 2024/25 arrangements required nursery families to submit a primary application and did not include nursery attendance among the priority categories. Treat those arrangements as belonging to that admissions year, and check the applicable policy when applying.

Transition support is a separate matter. The school’s SEND policy describes staff exchanging information, additional informal visits for children with SEND who need transition support and photo booklets showing new adults and classrooms. These help prepare a child for change; they do not determine admission.

Practical Information

The 2021–2022 booklet lists Wyken Nursery morning sessions at 8:40–11:40 and afternoons at 12:20–15:20. Phoenix Nursery’s listed sessions ran 8:30–11:30 and 12:30–15:30, with a lunchtime session between them. These are dated session patterns, so confirm the booking arrangement before committing to childcare plans.

The September 2025 nursery policy lists targeted funding and non-funded places for two-year-olds, alongside expanded 30-hour funding. For three- and four-year-olds, it lists universal 15-hour and extended 30-hour provision. Sessions outside grant funding may attract charges. Existing nursery children have priority over the waiting list when requesting altered provision or additional sessions; this concerns nursery bookings only.

The older nursery booklet recommends wellies, a sun hat and spare clothes, and describes authorised collection arrangements with a password for an emergency substitute adult. FAQs

Wyken Croft’s nursery policy covers children aged two to four.

No. Families need a separate primary application. Coventry’s 2024/25 arrangements explicitly said admission to a school nursery did not guarantee admission to that school.

Learning takes place through planned play within the EYFS. The nursery curriculum includes Word Aware vocabulary work, counting objects, imaginative play and exploring stories.

The September 2025 policy lists targeted and expanded funding for two-year-olds, plus universal 15-hour and extended 30-hour provision for three- and four-year-olds. Eligibility and the chosen booking pattern need to match the applicable funding route.
