At a Glance

The Colour Monster gives feelings a recognisable focus in the early years at Cramlington Village Primary School. Linked to Zones of Regulation, it sits alongside a check-in and a calming trolley that children can access themselves. These are concrete tools for recognising emotions and seeking help with them.

There are 26 nursery places within the primary school on Bowmont Drive, Cramlington. Ofsted judged early years provision Requires improvement following its inspection on 27 and 28 February 2024. Adults and children had warm relationships and the learning space was calm, but the curriculum needed closer attention to individual starting points. Families should weigh both sides of that picture.

The Nursery Day

Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), staff assess development across the learning areas to identify children who need additional help. The practical question is how those checks shape what a child does next. In February 2024, the early years curriculum took too little account of what children already knew and had experienced.

Mathematical support includes real objects to represent quantities, stories involving mathematical ideas and visual prompts for mathematical language. For children needing targeted help, the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach moves from handling objects to pictures and then abstract representations. That gives families a specific way to understand how number concepts can be broken into manageable steps.

Support in early years art includes role-play to develop spoken expression. Thinking time and pictures can help children understand and respond, rather than relying solely on spoken instructions. These are support approaches according to need, rather than a fixed timetable for every child.

Language development. In February 2024, communication teaching needed greater precision, including clearer decisions about the vocabulary children should learn. Parents should make the teaching of new words a focus when discussing their child's learning.

Care and Support

Early identification matters here. In February 2024, systems enabled staff to spot possible special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) promptly. Parents with concerns should begin with the class teacher, who discusses family views and relevant background before deciding on monitoring or further assessment.

At school level, support plans are developed with parents, and consultations provide feedback at least three times a year. More frequent contact can be agreed individually. This gives families a route to contribute information from home and review support together.

The school building is single storey and wheelchair accessible, with a medical room, changing facilities and an accessible toilet. These physical arrangements matter for children needing mobility or personal-care support.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the deadline for their child's entry year. Choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about the nursery experience itself, with the later school application treated as a separate step.

Practical Information

For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 01670 735177 or email info@villageprimary.org. School visits can be arranged through the office, providing an opportunity to discuss the learning experiences on offer before choosing a place.
