At a Glance

Treasure maps and listening to sounds give Seghill’s nursery its character: children practise concentrating, sharing and taking their first steps towards reading. Orange class is the school’s nursery provision, taking children from age three, with a maximum annual intake of 26. It sits within Seghill First School in the village of Seghill, south east Northumberland.

In June 2024, Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good. This is the early years judgement within the school inspection.

The Nursery Day

Listening comes before reading. In June 2024, nursery children practised recognising sounds, becoming familiar with the school’s reading approach ahead of Reception.

The early years foundation stage also brings social learning into children’s activities. Children learn to share, respond to adults’ directions and keep trying with tasks. A treasure hunt using a map held children’s attention in June 2024, giving a concrete example of play that calls for concentration and persistence. Independence develops alongside learning to play together.

Northern Stage performances were another early years experience in June 2024, taking learning beyond school through theatre. Curriculum checks. Across the school, assessment in foundation subjects needed more consistent use, and leaders needed to evaluate new subject curriculums more closely. These were school-wide improvement actions, rather than findings specific to nursery activities.

Care and Support

Settling received direct attention in June 2024: early years staff helped children adjust promptly to school life. For a child starting nursery, that support matters alongside the activities themselves. Learning to share and follow directions also helps children become accustomed to spending time with a group.

Weekly school newsletters keep families informed about learning and events. There is a school special educational needs coordinator and a governor responsible for SEND, both contactable through the office. Families of children with disabilities are encouraged to arrange a visit to meet staff and see the facilities, making that conversation part of considering the setting.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal admissions route; being in Orange class does not remove that step.

For entry in September 2026, applications went through the Northumberland County Council admissions portal, with a closing date of 15 January 2026. That admissions cycle is now past. The school follows the council’s admissions policy.

Transition activities follow an offer of a place. After a Reception offer, families are invited to meet as new starters’ parents, join sessions to stay and play, and attend a picnic with teddy bears. These give children and parents opportunities to prepare for the next stage; they are separate from the allocation of places.

Practical Information

Two attendance patterns shape the week. The 15-hour option consists of five mornings, each running from 8:45am to 11:45am. The 30-hour pattern starts at 8:30am and finishes at 3:15pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Wednesday collection. Children on the 30-hour pattern finish at 1:15pm on Wednesdays. Families need to accommodate that earlier collection when planning their week.

Nursery applications go directly to the school, and application forms can be obtained from the office. Visits can be arranged by appointment through the same office. For enquiries, telephone 0191 237 0419 or email schooladmin@seghillschool.co.uk.
