A bug hotel in the nursery’s outdoor area gives Becontree’s youngest children something concrete to investigate: insects settling into their own small habitat. This is nursery provision within Becontree Primary School, on Stevens Road in Dagenham, with morning and afternoon sessions.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 18 and 19 July 2023. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The early years findings give useful substance to the grade: children sustained their attention during activities, cooperated in play and practised taking turns.
Speaking, listening and noticing sounds form a clear part of the nursery curriculum. Becontree uses Schofield & Sims My Letters and Sounds, with its nursery phase covering sound recognition and the ability to hear how spoken words break into smaller sounds. Children also practise combining sounds aloud. For parents, the emphasis is on the listening and language foundations of reading.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the curriculum framework. In July 2023, early years staff tracked individual children’s development and used those observations to decide what to teach next. Learning was adjusted to each child’s abilities and needs, giving assessment a practical purpose within the day. Children’s language and communication developed well.
Outside, the bug hotel was funded by Rund, a surveying and construction consultancy. Children observe the insects using it and investigate small creatures in their nursery outdoor space. It gives them a real subject for questions and close observation, alongside the sound and language work.
Learning to manage shared activities is part of early years life here. In July 2023, children learnt routines and responded to instructions, while sharing and turn-taking supported their play with others. Those are useful everyday foundations for joining a group and concentrating on an activity.
Within the wider school, the Inclusion Team has responsibilities covering speech and communication, special educational needs, emotional well-being and English as an additional language. Becontree’s approach to additional needs involves parents and relevant professionals in planning support for the individual child. This makes family involvement part of the planning process, rather than an afterthought.
The school also provides an Early Help offer for families, bringing advice or support into play when difficulties begin. Its staffing structure includes nursery nurses and learning support assistants.
Attending Becontree’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat choosing a nursery session and applying for Reception as separate decisions.
The morning nursery session finishes at 11:45am. Afternoon provision runs from 12:30pm to 3:30pm, so the collection time differs from the main school day. These timings matter when coordinating siblings’ collections or arranging childcare around a session.
Nursery children may wear a light blue polo shirt instead of a shirt and tie. Alternatively, children who can manage buttons may wear the blue shirt without a tie. Maroon sweatshirts, grey trousers or skirts and sturdy black footwear form part of the school uniform guidance. Label clothing to help keep belongings identifiable. Nursery children use school-provided cups.
