A sandpit, shared outdoor learning and stories children help to shape give Marsh Green’s nursery its character. This is provision for three and four year olds within Marsh Green Primary School in Dagenham, with communication, play and growing independence central to its early years approach. Children have room to choose an activity, while adults plan teaching around that exploration.
At the September 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that early years children played cooperatively and became accustomed to routines and expectations quickly. Those findings matter for a child learning both to join a group and to manage a school session.
Play has a deliberate place in the timetable. Children choose between construction, imaginative activities and water play during continuous provision, meaning time to explore with adults supporting their learning. Directed teaching sits at the start or end of sessions so that an activity need not be interrupted halfway through. The sandpit becomes a place to practise conversation and relationships as well as play; early years children also learn together outdoors.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects learning to talk, movement and social development, alongside number, literacy, creativity and understanding the world. Here, adults use stories, imagined situations and real experiences to bring those areas together. Children’s interests influence changes to the provision, giving their choices a part in what happens next.
Language receives explicit attention. Helicopter Stories is used to encourage storytelling and imagination, while Early Words Together at Three is among the targeted language interventions. Adults model language and allow thinking time before asking a question. That gives a child time to form an answer rather than simply follow an adult’s lead.
Books travel home too: children choose a library book each week. Rhymes, songs and listening to sounds sit alongside opportunities to draw and make marks. Indoors and outdoors, activities develop the muscles and coordination needed before writing becomes a more formal task.
Settling starts with relationships. Staff speak with parents and previous settings before a child begins, and the initial transition is adapted to the individual. A welcome meeting, stay and play opportunities and parent workshops give families ways to become familiar with staff and learning routines. Marvellous Monday events add another route into that partnership.
Progress is recorded through observations on 2Simple, and parents can discuss achievements or concerns with a teacher or teaching assistant. Brief conversations are possible around sessions, with appointments for longer discussions. Families are encouraged to practise independence with coats, bags, toileting and handwashing.
For additional needs, the school’s SEND arrangements include a Personal Support Plan reviewed with parents each term. The school SENDCo holds the National Award in SEN Coordination (NASENCO), and teaching assistants support individual and small group interventions. Visual timetables are used throughout classrooms; the site has wheelchair access and accessible toilets with space for changing. These are practical supports for participation and care.
Children attending all day stay for lunch. Families can choose a charged school meal, booked through ParentPay, or send a packed lunch. Parents supply nappies, wipes and sun cream.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham using the normal Reception admissions process and its deadline. Treat that application as a separate task from arranging nursery sessions.
Shared outdoor learning brings early years children together during their nursery experience. Familiarity with the setting is useful, but it does not replace the Reception application.
Term-time sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am in the morning and noon to 3pm in the afternoon. The all-day option runs from 8.30am to 3pm. Universal funding provides 15 hours a week across 38 weeks for three and four year olds; eligible working families can access 30 hours. Funded hours fit within core sessions, and additional afternoon hours can be purchased through ParentPay. Optional trips and late collection also carry charges; contact the school for current charges.
Nursery uniform combines a purple collared T-shirt with green jogging bottoms, a green jumper or cardigan and plain black trainers. At collection, wait outside the classroom for staff to dismiss your child, and tell staff beforehand if another person will collect them.
