Nursery at Monteagle Primary School

At a Glance

Conversation drives the learning at Monteagle’s nursery: adults join imaginative play, introduce vocabulary and help children explain their ideas. That gives play a clear educational purpose. In February 2026, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision to be Strong standard, with children concentrating well and communicating confidently. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.

The nursery belongs to Monteagle Primary School on Burnham Road in Dagenham. Its September 2026 intake covered children born between September 2022 and August 2023. Families can choose a shorter session or a full day, with an optional extension for those needing a later finish.

The Nursery Day

Children’s own play sits alongside activities directed by adults. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework; in everyday terms here, learning brings together conversation, physical development and the beginnings of reading, writing and mathematics. Experiences respond to children’s interests, giving staff opportunities to build learning around what catches their attention.

Imaginative role play is a useful example. Adults participate and prompt children to develop their explanations, so talking becomes part of the activity itself. February 2026 findings also identified deliberate teaching of larger movements and hand control, including help with pencil grip. These are practical foundations for early writing. Phonics starts in early years, introducing children to the relationship between sounds and reading.

Jigsaw provides the nursery’s personal, social and health education. Themes include Healthy Me, Being Me and Relationships, while weekly lessons use circle time and calm me time. Children have opportunities to share ideas and consider other people’s feelings. In February 2026, early years children showed independence in routines, cooperation and growing control over their emotions.

Care and Support

The nursery team includes a teacher, a higher level teaching assistant and a teaching assistant. Tapestry, an online learning journal, gives parents access to records of their child’s development from enrolment. This makes progress something families can follow beyond a formal meeting.

Early years staff assess children’s needs and use parents’ knowledge to shape support. Observations help identify developmental difficulties, with individual plans and work involving families and outside agencies. For concerns about special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), parents start with the class teacher; the SEND coordinator can then become involved. The wider school has a single-storey building and classroom ramps, relevant practical features for families considering physical access.

Lunch can be a school meal or a packed lunch. Meals are prepared on site using fresh ingredients, with salad included and milk and water available. Nursery snacks are free. Families provide their child’s necessary consumables, including wipes, nappies and sun cream, so these need to be part of the daily preparation.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal local authority process and meet its deadline. Nursery applications are handled by the school, whereas admission to the primary school is managed by the local authority. Keep the two applications separate in your planning.

Learning records from nursery are passed to Reception for the next academic year. This transfers staff’s knowledge of the child’s development; it does not secure admission.

Practical Information

The September 2026 arrangements offer a 15-hour placement, alongside 30-hour and 35-hour options. Eligible families using extended government funding have a full day from 8:30am to 2:30pm. The 35-hour option runs from 8:30am to 3:30pm and includes charged additional time.

Booking the extension. The optional bridging session runs from 2:30pm to 3:30pm. Families must notify the school at the end of the preceding term, cannot join it mid-term, and places depend on availability. This requires planning ahead. School meals carry a separate charge; a packed lunch has no additional cost. Ask the school for current charges. Invoices are issued half-termly.

Nursery uniform includes a white polo shirt, a red sweatshirt or cardigan bearing the school logo, black trousers or jogging trousers, and black shoes. For enquiries, email office@monteagle.org.uk or telephone 020 8270 4613.
