Nursery at Roding Primary School

Play, conversation and outdoor exploration give Roding’s nursery its character. Based at the Cannington Road site in Dagenham, this is the school’s own nursery, with classroom and outdoor learning forming part of the same approach. Roding caters for children from age three; nursery learning focuses on language, social development and an interest in books.
The emphasis is practical. Children explore through play and real experiences, rather than spending their nursery time solely on preparation for formal lessons. For families, that makes the nursery’s approach to communication and learning together central to the choice.
EYFS Development Matters guides the curriculum. In parent language, Roding’s nursery combines learning through play with a deliberate focus on children’s language and personal and social development. Reading is another priority: encouraging children to enjoy books sits alongside exploring their surroundings.
Learning takes place indoors and outdoors. The classroom is one part of the learning environment, with outdoor exploration extending children’s experiences beyond it. A concrete example beyond the school grounds was the nursery’s Barking Park trip, scheduled for 15 June 2026. The calendar marked the nursery closed that day, a useful reminder that an outing can change the usual childcare arrangements.
In May 2023, Ofsted found that the early years curriculum gave children a positive foundation, with activities and resources extending their interests and understanding. Number recognition and accurate counting were specific strengths of that early years provision. Those are useful foundations for later learning, although the findings cover early years collectively rather than a separate nursery judgement.
Starting nursery includes opportunities to become familiar with the setting. The 2026 calendar included Nursery Stay & Play on 1 July, followed by a Nursery Intake Meeting on 9 July; a staggered nursery start was scheduled for 14 September. These were dated events in that intake cycle, giving families contact with the nursery before the September start.
For everyday questions, the child’s teacher is the first contact, followed by the Phase Lead. The office can arrange appointments with other staff. Across Roding, teachers, support staff and SENDCOs work together, and staff receive continuing SEND training. Families can use that contact structure to discuss their child’s needs and support.
Food needs separate budgeting. Nursery children are excluded from the London free school meals scheme described by Roding. The school’s catering uses BD Group’s two-week menu, with food cooked on site, a daily halal option and provision for dietary and cultural requirements. Ask the school for current meal charges.
Attending Roding’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. Roding directs parents to the Borough’s application form or a One Stop Shop, including Dagenham Heathway. Its calendar gives 15 January 2027 as the Reception application closing date.
Transition activity is a separate matter from admission. A New Reception Stay & Play session was scheduled for 10 June 2026, offering a familiarisation opportunity for that intake. Keep the application deadline in view even when your child already attends nursery.
Morning nursery runs from 8:30am to 11:30am; the afternoon session runs from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Roding also offers a 30-hour nursery place for parents entitled to that funded childcare. Additional nursery wraparound from 2:30pm to 3:30pm is chargeable, so families using it should obtain current charges from the school.
Nursery enquiries go through the office at office.301@roding.net or 0208 270 4010. Applying involves a short form for the waiting list. As part of a child’s induction to starting at Roding, school tours can be arranged through the Family Liaison Practitioners, allowing parents to ask questions and see the grounds.
The morning session is 8:30am to 11:30am, and the afternoon session is 12:30pm to 3:30pm.
It follows EYFS Development Matters, with play and real experiences indoors and outdoors, focusing on language, personal and social skills, and enjoyment of reading.
