Nursery at Valence Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Stories, listening games and room to explore give Valence’s nursery its character. Children can join from their third birthday, with provision at both Bonham Road and St. George’s Road in Dagenham. Families choose a site when applying, so the location is part of the decision from the start.

Morning and afternoon sessions sit alongside a limited number of full-day places. Bonham Road also houses the Nursery Assessment Resource Provision (NARP), where a personalised curriculum concentrates on communication, interaction and independence. The June 2024 inspection described NARP as part time; families should confirm its current attendance arrangements with the school. This specialist provision has its own teaching arrangements and supported access to mainstream nursery play.

The Nursery Day

Play and adult guidance work together here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) takes learning into the classroom and outdoors through exploration and practical experiences. For parents, that means early learning includes talking, playing with others and discovering how things work, alongside preparation for reading.

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised provides the named approach to early reading. Its Nursery foundations combine stories and poems with action rhymes, listening activities and oral blending, where children hear separate sounds joined into a word. These experiences mix adult direction with children’s own choices. The reading corner is accessible during daily free-flow time, with its books refreshed regularly.

Story themes also extend into role-play and small-world areas. Children can act out familiar tales and rhymes together, connecting the language they hear with imaginative play. In June 2024, Ofsted found that nursery adults on both sites developed children’s vocabulary and imagination while helping them share resources and wait their turn. Those are useful foundations for joining group activities and expressing ideas.

Within NARP, individual teaching and small-group work are used alongside structured activities. Children practise skills with mainstream peers, supported by a NARP adult. Outdoors, they use both a separate area with closely guided activities and the mainstream nursery’s outdoor space. The change of context gives children opportunities to use their developing play skills with a larger group.

Care and Support

Parents’ priorities inform the NARP curriculum, and termly meetings allow families to discuss progress. Staff use observation and the Developmental Curriculum to identify what a child can do and plan the next steps. In June 2024, the nursery assessment provision was well managed, with adults helping children acquire skills and communicate more clearly.

The wider SEND support route starts with the class teacher, with the SENCo coordinating additional help where needed. Class Dojo provides a way to raise concerns with teachers; ParentMail carries school communications. The early-years team includes nursery teachers at both sites, a nursery manager at St. George’s Road, and support roles including a higher level teaching assistant at Bonham Road.

For children staying through lunch, a selected school dinner includes a hot main course and dessert. Families can provide a healthy packed lunch instead. Toilet training. Nursery admission normally requires children to be toilet trained, with exceptional circumstances discussed individually. Families should factor that expectation into preparations for starting.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through the local authority’s normal process. Valence’s Reception admissions page lists siblings already attending the school and proximity to the school as oversubscription criteria; nursery attendance is not listed as a priority.

For the September 2026 intake, the online route was eAdmissions, with a deadline of 15 January 2026. That deadline has passed. Site choice matters again at this stage: Bonham Road and St. George’s Road are separate choices in the application process. Familiarity with nursery life should therefore be kept separate from the decision about allocating a school place.

Practical Information

Both sites offer mornings from 8:30am to 11:30am and afternoons from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Full days run from 8:30am to 3:30pm, with limited availability. The 30-hour model requires attendance each school day across the academic year rather than allowing families to rearrange the hours.

Families eligible for 15-hour funding can choose the shorter provision or pay for additional hours. Lunch and optional activities such as trips can carry separate charges; contact the school for current charges. Gems provides after-school care for nursery children at both sites until 5:30pm, including a snack, with a hot meal included in the full session.

Nursery uniform consists of grey tracksuit bottoms, a white polo and a royal blue jumper or sweatshirt. Application forms come from either school office. Call 020 3006 9888, choosing option 1 for St. George’s Road or option 2 for Bonham Road.

FAQs

Children can start once they are three. Applications are made for a particular site.

Both sites offer 8:30am to 11:30am mornings, 12:30pm to 3:30pm afternoons and limited full-day places from 8:30am to 3:30pm.

Yes. A healthy packed lunch can replace the chargeable school dinner, which includes a hot meal and dessert.

Nursery attendance does not guarantee admission. The stated Reception oversubscription criteria are siblings at the school and proximity, and parents must apply separately through the local authority process.

The Nursery Assessment Resource Provision uses personalised teaching to develop communication, interaction and independence. Children also join mainstream nursery play with staff support and use both specialist and mainstream outdoor areas.
