At a Glance

A story bell, a listening station and the Book Fairy give Becket’s nursery a character rooted in language and play. Books have a dedicated reading area, while children can choose resources and return to activities that interest them. This is an introduction to school built around doing, talking and exploring.

For three- and four-year-olds, the nursery forms the first stage of Becket Primary School’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Nursery and Reception share a learning environment and an early years team. Children can start in the term after turning three. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 13 and 14 March 2023; this was part of the school inspection.

The Nursery Day

Play and adult-led activities sit alongside one another. Staff use children’s interests and development to plan learning, balancing opportunities to follow their own ideas with organised story, language, music and maths sessions. The EYFS brings together communication, movement and emotional development with early reading, number work, creativity and exploration of the world. For parents, that means learning extends beyond a lesson into a conversation, a construction or a game.

Early Excellence shapes the layout, with distinct learning areas indoors and outside and equipment children can select themselves. Funky Fingers, play-dough and other malleable materials provide opportunities to practise small hand movements. Dough Disco and Squiggle While You Wriggle add movement to preparation for writing. Children also explore materials by building houses linked to traditional tales, giving practical activity a purpose.

Reading starts with listening. Twinkl Phonics Level 1 introduces environmental, instrumental and other sounds, while shared stories are part of daily EYFS provision. The nursery reading area and listening station give children further ways to engage with books. In March 2023, nursery children were exploring sounds through songs and rhymes.

Outdoor learning extends the choice of activity. Forest School includes a mud kitchen, a story circle and scavenger hunts within its programme. The school aims to provide afternoon sessions for EYFS children across the seasons, giving outdoor exploration a place alongside classroom learning.

Care and Support

Settling begins with information from home. Parents complete a Home-School Sheet with teachers, and information from previous settings also helps staff understand a child’s starting point. Settling-in sessions introduce the routine before staff use observations during the opening weeks to identify strengths and next steps.

Communication continues at session handovers, through parent evenings and on Class Dojo. EYFS updates include learning activities and vocabulary for the following week, giving families something specific to talk about and practise at home. Outdoor Learning and Mathematics sessions also invite parents to take part.

Language support includes staff modelling and extending children’s speech, visual symbols and individual programmes involving Speech and Language Therapists. The school’s SEND process includes discussion with parents before additional work begins, an individual learning plan and review meetings. These provide points at which families can contribute to support. In March 2023, children were learning to identify their emotions from the start of nursery, with most beginning to regulate feelings and behaviour.

The school has its own kitchen, where the catering team prepares food, and supplies information about dish allergens. Packed lunches are permitted under the school’s food rules, which exclude fizzy drinks and glass bottles.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority under Becket’s listed admission criteria. Families must make a separate application through Derby City Council. For the September 2026 intake, the application deadline was 15 January 2026; that cycle has passed.

The shared early years environment gives nursery children familiarity with the wider team and learning space. That continuity is separate from the allocation of Reception places.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am, and afternoons from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. The booking patterns are 15 funded hours across every morning or every afternoon, or 30 hours Monday to Friday for qualifying families. Funding operates over 38 weeks, with the extended entitlement subject to eligibility. Parents using a 30-hour code must renew it every three months.

Wraparound care. The school’s breakfast and after-school provision is for Reception to Year 6. Families choosing nursery sessions should plan care around the nursery timetable.

Nursery application forms can be collected from the office. Contact 01332 347595 or admin@becket.derby.sch.uk for enquiries; school visits can be arranged through the office. Funded hours exclude extras such as meals and additional activities. Ask the school for current charges.

FAQs

Families can take 15 hours across every morning or every afternoon. Qualifying families can take 30 hours Monday to Friday over term time.

No. Nursery attendance is not a priority criterion in Becket’s listed arrangements and does not guarantee a place. A separate application to Derby City Council is required.
