Nursery at Brackensdale Spencer Academy

Games, rhymes and a clear emphasis on communication give Brackensdale Spencer Academy’s nursery its character. Learning to hear sounds starts through play, while language development receives attention from the Nursery class onwards. For parents, that makes talking and listening central to the experience, alongside the beginnings of reading.
The nursery sits within the primary academy on Walthamstow Drive in Mackworth, Derby. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 15 and 16 October 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Early reading foundations develop through sound games and rhymes. This gives children a playful introduction to the skills they will draw on as readers. Communication and language receive a similarly deliberate emphasis, including for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
Indoor and outdoor learning spaces are designed around children’s different stages of development. In October 2024, the early years environment met those differing needs exceptionally well, and staff chose resources that attracted children’s interest and encouraged imaginative activity. The physical setting and the materials within it both supported learning through play.
Routines also shape the day. Early years children adapted quickly to behavioural expectations and sustained their attention during play in October 2024. That combination matters: children have room to become absorbed in an activity while learning how the school day works.
Care was a strength of the early years provision in October 2024, with nursery children receiving close attention to their wellbeing. The learning environment supported their developmental needs as well as their activities, connecting care with the way children used the indoor and outdoor spaces.
Support for communication starts in nursery and includes children with SEND. The emphasis is practical: developing language helps children participate in learning. It also makes communication an important topic for conversations between families and staff.
For parents and carers, the class teacher is the first point of contact. Reception staff can arrange a teacher appointment, giving families a direct route to discuss their child’s experience. A SEND coordinator is also part of the school’s team.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process; the school’s application route is through Derby City Council. Treat that application as a separate step when planning your child’s move into school.
School enquiries go to info@brackensdalespencer.org.uk, or telephone 01332 341171. These provide a straightforward starting point for contacting the office about joining the nursery.
The school’s general morning opening runs from 8:40am, with doors closing at 8:55am. Its EYFS collection time is 3:10pm. These are school-day arrangements rather than a nursery session booking pattern, so they should be read in that context when considering the family timetable.
