Growing independence and confidence give Cottons Farm’s early years provision its character. In July 2025, children were becoming more secure emotionally, understood familiar routines and took pleasure in their learning. These are meaningful foundations for a young child: feeling settled matters alongside learning new skills.
The nursery belongs to Cottons Farm Primary Academy in Sinfin, Derby, part of The Harmony Trust. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 8 and 9 July 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Language is a central priority in the trust’s approach to early learning. Its Read Achieve Succeed strategy places conversation and vocabulary development at the beginning of reading. For parents, the emphasis is on children developing the words to express themselves and understand what others say, alongside their first steps towards reading.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) has its own supporting framework within the trust. Academies can shape their curriculum around their communities, while shared principles include practical experiences, children’s interests and opportunities to explain learning to others. This gives a clear educational direction while allowing each academy to make its own choices about teaching.
Reading receives attention from an early stage, including phonics. The trust’s approach connects spoken language with learning about letters and their sounds, rather than treating reading as an isolated skill. Communication, early writing and mathematics are also priorities across its curriculum, intended to help children access subsequent learning.
At Cottons Farm, the early years curriculum was carefully organised in July 2025. Children showed enthusiasm for what they were learning and satisfaction in their achievements. Familiar routines were another strength. Together, these findings suggest an early years experience in which learning and increasing independence develop alongside one another.
Emotional security is a significant part of the early years picture. In July 2025, children were developing confidence in managing routines within an inclusive setting that reflected different cultural backgrounds. For families, that places everyday adjustment and belonging alongside the educational content of the day.
Support for additional needs. The July 2025 inspection raised a concern across the school about inconsistent curriculum adaptations for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Some were learning less than they could. This was a school-wide concern, rather than a finding specifically about nursery care, but it is relevant when weighing support for a child with additional needs.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place at Cottons Farm Primary Academy. Nursery admission and Reception admission are separate processes: families must make a further application through the normal Reception admissions route by the applicable deadline.
Choosing the nursery therefore means choosing the early years experience itself. Keep the later school application as a separate decision and task; familiarity with the school must not be treated as an offer of a Reception place.
