Nursery at Grampian Primary Academy

Five attendance patterns give Grampian’s nursery a practical distinction: families can choose mornings, afternoons, either end of the week, or full-time attendance. It is the nursery within Grampian Primary Academy in Sinfin, Derby. Children can join from their third birthday, with funded entitlement beginning in the following term. Those are different starting points.
In November 2022, nursery learning focused on language and communication. In November 2022, nursery staff helped children learn through playing together, while forest school brought opportunities to explore outdoors and get messy. This connects learning with things children can handle and try, rather than relying only on adult explanation.
The activities had substance. Nursery children demonstrated controlled behaviour while using flint to create a spark and preparing porridge during a story activity. These examples show practical exploration sitting alongside communication and learning with other children. They also give parents a concrete picture of the early years experience: conversation, shared play and trying unfamiliar tasks with staff support.
Fruit and milk are provided each day. For children attending all day, the paid lunchtime supervision arrangement includes a hot school meal, making lunch part of the practical decision about longer attendance. Families supply personal items their child needs, including wipes, sun cream and nappies.
Longer days require preparation. For the start-of-week and end-of-week patterns, the nursery emphasises children being ready for all-day attendance and able to handle their own personal hygiene. That expectation matters when choosing between short sessions and days that include lunch.
The school’s Inclusion Team works with families, teachers and other agencies to tailor learning to children’s needs. Parents can contact the SENCo at senco@grampian.anthemtrust.uk or through the school office. This gives families a direct route to discuss additional support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through the normal Reception admissions process; joining the nursery should therefore be treated as a decision about the nursery experience itself.
The Reception application route is Derby City Council. For the September 2026 intake, the closing date was 15 January 2026. That cycle is past, so families planning a later start should use the council’s relevant admissions timetable.
Attendance is term-time only, Monday to Friday, within 8.45am to 3.30pm. Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoons run from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. The start-of-week pattern combines Monday and Tuesday full days with Wednesday morning. Its counterpart combines Wednesday afternoon with Thursday and Friday full days.
All children qualify for a funded 15-hour place from the term after turning three. Eligible families can access Extended Hours Funding, with a valid eligibility code required before additional funded hours are confirmed. Applications for that funding must be made before the preceding term ends. Full-time attendance combines 30 funded hours with separately charged lunchtime supervision.
Once a child has settled, families using 15 hours can buy extra sessions, subject to space and agreement with nursery staff. Extra sessions require advance booking, with fees payable two weeks before sessions. Charges remain payable during absence, including holidays, bank holidays and sickness. Contact admin@grampian.anthemtrust.uk or 01332 765546 for nursery enquiries and current charges.
