Nursery at Kingdom Christian School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Small classes, learning through play and an explicitly Biblical outlook give Kingdom Christian School’s nursery its character. The provision caters for three and four year olds within an independent Christian school in Alfreton. The nursery describes its small group as helping staff build familiarity with each child, with children encouraged to learn at their own pace.

Christian teaching is a central consideration for families. The school aims to teach from a Biblical perspective, while welcoming families with any faith or none. In December 2024, the school occupied Watchorn Church’s premises. It announced a need to relocate by September 2026 because its lease was ending, and announced a new home. That change matters when considering the nursery’s physical setting.

The Nursery Day

Play provides the nursery’s starting point for learning. Its curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the framework for early learning and development, with long-term planning organised into Cycle A and Cycle B. For children, the concrete activities include listening to stories, joining in with nursery rhymes and retelling familiar material. These give them opportunities to practise language and remember what they have heard.

At the Ofsted inspection of 3 to 5 December 2024, early years provision was judged Good. The early-years curriculum had been planned carefully, children retold stories and rhymes accurately and enthusiastically, and staff introduced a clearly sequenced set of sounds. This supported preparation for their next stage of learning. At the same inspection, teachers across the school were asked to check every pupil’s understanding more precisely before moving on, especially younger pupils. Families can ask how understanding is checked in nursery.

Outdoor learning has a place in the school’s approach: experiencing weather, seasonal changes and nature is intended to develop communication, imagination and physical skills. Prayer and worship begin the school day, with participation voluntary. Families should be comfortable with Christian beliefs shaping resources and teaching.

Care and Support

Getting to know the child begins before they start. Parents complete an information form about their child, giving teachers a basis for meeting individual needs and easing the move from home. A nursery teacher forms part of the team. The nursery also emphasises working alongside parents as their child’s first educators.

For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the initial visit would normally include an introduction to the SENCO. Support depends on the school’s resources: some individual needs may exceed what it can provide. Discussing the child’s requirements early therefore matters.

A morning snack has a voluntary contribution. Parents supply nappies and sun cream, with no charge if these are forgotten. The school’s Early Help Offer can connect families with parenting advice, health support or bereavement counselling.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat Reception as a separate application, rather than an automatic continuation. The admissions process reviewed in February 2019 directs applications to the School Office, with September-entry applications due by the end of February of that year.

Nursery attendance is not among its oversubscription priorities. Those priorities concern church membership, existing siblings and church or community connections. Familiarity with the school and preparation for further learning should therefore be considered separately from securing admission.

Practical Information

The nursery operates for 38 weeks each year, during term time. Full days run from 8.50am to 3.15pm; mornings run from 8.50am to noon. Afternoon sessions are also offered. Families agree sessions when joining or at the beginning of a new half term.

Both 15-hour and 30-hour funding are supported for three and four year olds. Universal funding begins in the term following the third birthday; up to 30 hours are available to eligible working parents. For 30-hour funding, parents must keep their childcare code updated; changed circumstances or an invalid code can make sessions payable. Additional hours can be purchased privately, and booked private sessions remain chargeable during absence. Ask the school for current charges.

Uniform is optional in nursery, and securing a nursery place requires no deposit. Enquiries can go to info@kc-school.co.uk or 01773 831352; the initial meeting includes a short tour.
