Nursery at Pear Tree Infant School

Child-led play and a sensory room give Pear Tree’s nursery its character: children can pursue their interests, then use a quieter space to regulate before returning to learning. The provision belongs to Pear Tree Infant School in Normanton, Derby. Its nursery pages use the Walbrook Nursery name and identify a Rising 2s room for two-year-olds.
At the school’s inspection on 30 November and 1 December 2022, Ofsted graded early years provision Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Children’s interests shape the learning. Walbrook’s named deep level learning approach starts with children’s choices, with practitioners extending their play through tasks that have personal meaning. The emphasis is on developing independence and persistence alongside knowledge and skills. Adults contribute to the exploration; children help determine its direction.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum brings together learning to communicate, manage feelings and relationships, move confidently and explore ideas. Nursery planning also covers mathematics, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world. For parents, this means play has several purposes: conversation, physical development and early learning sit alongside each other.
Books provide concrete starting points. Vocabulary materials include The Train Ride, Whatever Next and The Very Hungry Caterpillar, giving families recognisable stories to share. Daily outdoor learning for the youngest children adds active exploration to the mix.
Indoors, the nursery sensory room contains bubble tubes, toys that respond to children’s actions and books linked to their interests. Children also have the opportunity to follow a daily sensory circuit, progressing through activities intended to increase alertness, organise movement and bring calm before learning in the main room.
Regulation has a physical space of its own. Children can use a weighted blanket, watch lights or spin on the whizzy dizzy in the nursery sensory room. These are specific options for children with sensory processing needs, rather than a single expectation that everyone settles in the same way.
Praise Walls bring encouragement into nursery routines. Staff use positive language during learning, play and lunch, and parents have been invited to learn the phrases for use at home. This gives families a practical way to reinforce familiar language beyond the nursery day.
For wider SEND support, families can access links to Derby’s Local Offer, Derby SENDIASS and Derby Umbrella. These provide routes to information, advice and family support alongside the nursery’s own sensory provision.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. The school’s admissions page directs primary applicants to Derby City Council; treat that application as a separate task from joining the nursery waiting list.
The nursery enquiry route is the Walbrook waiting list: telephone 01332 772434 or email admin@peartreei.derby.sch.uk. This is a direct route for expressing interest in a nursery place.
Building plans. A move into a new school building was planned for 2026. That announcement describes a planned change, so it should not be treated as confirmation that nursery children already occupy the new premises.
