Go Wild gives Ravensdale’s nursery a distinctive outdoor strand: children explore natural materials, make discoveries through their senses and practise describing what they notice. The school grounds provide the setting. For families who value learning outdoors, this is a concrete part of the nursery’s curriculum rather than simply an aspiration.
The nursery belongs to Ravensdale Infant and Nursery School in Mickleover, Derby. Its teaching team includes a nursery teacher who also leads the foundation stage. Ofsted judged early years provision Good at the inspection on 1 and 2 July 2025; that judgement covers the school’s early years provision.
Speaking, listening and curiosity shape the nursery’s stated aims. Games and investigations are intended to help children ask questions, think independently and learn to care for themselves and other people. The emphasis gives parents a picture of learning through activity and conversation, with development paced to the individual child.
The curriculum includes an EYFS overview, with reading, personal development and outdoor learning as recurring strands. Nursery topic headings have included family relationships in autumn 2025 and change in spring 2026. These provide familiar starting points for children’s questions rather than a list of formal lessons.
Go Wild uses a Forest School ethos, with staff qualified at Level 3 delivering outdoor learning. Children investigate natural resources across the seasons and use language to explain discoveries and make predictions. Planning develops from their interests and earlier experiences, so their questions help shape subsequent activities.
At the July 2025 inspection, the revised early years curriculum was still becoming established, and early writing needed a more systematic teaching approach. This makes the development of writing skills a useful focus for parents following their child’s progress.
Relish School Food supplies lunches, and nursery children can have a school dinner for an additional charge. Choices include a jacket potato with fillings, a vegetarian dish and a meat or fish dish; some days also include a cold choice. A salad bar accompanies meals, with milk or water for children eating school dinners. Ask the school for current meal charges.
Families have direct routes into support: the school’s SENDCO is also its inclusion lead, and SEND enquiries can go to senco@ravensdalei.derby.sch.uk. The nursery page also provides family information on toilet training, speech development and healthy packed lunches.
Communication uses ParentHub, with a move to ARBOR messaging planned once all parents have app access. Medical tracker handles medication and first-aid notifications. These give families distinct channels for routine messages and care updates.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Derby City Council’s admissions team if they want their child to remain at Ravensdale. Treat that application as a separate step in planning your child’s next year.
Derby City Council manages school-age admissions, applying an order of priority when applications exceed places. Being familiar with the school through nursery attendance does not replace the Reception application.
For nursery admission enquiries, telephone the school office on 01332 513862. General enquiries can also go to admin@ravensdalei.derby.sch.uk, while nursery funding questions have a separate business-office route at sbm@ravensdalei.derby.sch.uk.
School dinners must be paid through ARBOR Pay before 8.30am. For families choosing those meals, payment belongs in the morning routine alongside preparing for nursery.
