Listening comes before letters at Rosehill’s nursery. Daily Twinkl phonics begins with recognising sounds, playing with rhythm and hearing how words fit together. This is the school’s own nursery on Reginald Street in Derby, with a curriculum that adapts the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to the children attending.
The EYFS gives learning several connected strands: relationships and emotions, movement, communication, early reading and writing, mathematical ideas, creativity and discovering the world. Nursery planning covers these strands while adjusting to children’s needs. Topics include I am Special, Let’s Celebrate and It’s Cold Outside, giving activities a recognisable theme rather than treating each area as an isolated lesson.
Twinkl Phase 1 phonics happens daily. Children distinguish environmental noises from instrumental sounds, explore body percussion and experiment with their voices. Rhyme and alliteration develop attention to how words sound. Oral blending and segmenting then involve hearing the separate sounds in a word and putting them together. The emphasis is on listening and speaking as foundations for later reading.
Mathematics includes shape, measurement, space and number, with activities taking place outside as well as indoors. Nursery work prepares children for the school’s Power Maths programme. That gives early mathematical exploration a connection to the approach they will encounter later.
At the December 2024 inspection, Ofsted described early-years classrooms as calm places where adults developed children’s language through activities. Counting appeared in board games and hide-and-seek; wrapping a large present introduced problem-solving, while moving a block to build a ramp required cooperation. These are early-years examples rather than a nursery timetable, but they show how practical play can bring conversation, mathematical thinking and teamwork together.
Class Dojo connects parents with nursery learning through photographs and links. It gives families concrete starting points for conversations about what their child has been doing.
For additional needs, the school’s SENDCo coordinates support, with the class teacher as the first contact for concerns about progress. The support process follows Assess, Plan, Do, Review: teachers and parents discuss adjustments, agree intended outcomes and revisit the effect of the support. Parents’ knowledge of their child forms part of that planning.
Accessibility needs deserve an individual discussion. The school occupies a building on different levels, with teaching rooms both upstairs and downstairs. Its pupil accessible toilet includes a ceiling hoist and a bed whose height can be adjusted. Families can arrange a school visit and a meeting with the SENDCo to discuss their child’s needs in that physical setting.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process; the Derby City Council School Admissions Team administers school admissions. Treat the nursery appointment and the Reception application as separate steps, so choosing the nursery does not replace applying for the next stage.
Nursery registration begins with an appointment to meet the Nursery Team, arranged through the school office on 01332 229229. General enquiries can also go to admin@Rosehill.derby.sch.uk. Office hours run from 8am to 4pm; these are office contact hours, not nursery session times.
Its EYFS curriculum covers communication, physical and emotional development, literacy, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world, adapted to the children attending.
Daily teaching follows Twinkl Phase 1, including listening to sounds, rhythm, rhyme, alliteration and oral blending and segmenting.
The nursery uses Class Dojo for learning links and photographs of children’s activities.
