At a Glance

Play with a clear learning purpose is the defining picture of early years at Stenson Fields Primary Community School. The nursery belongs to a primary school whose children start from age three, giving families an introduction to education within the school community.

At the Ofsted inspection on 27 and 28 April 2022, early years provision received an Outstanding judgement. That judgement covers the school's early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The useful detail behind it is the combination of clear learning expectations, adult guidance and children's enthusiasm for carrying learning into play.

The Nursery Day

In April 2022, the early years learning spaces encouraged children to explore with purpose. Adults demonstrated new learning clearly, and children took those ideas into their play. For parents, this gives a picture of play connected to learning, with adults helping children understand and practise something new.

Early reading was a particular strength within early years at that time. Children applied familiar letter sounds to tackle words they had not encountered before. Writing also stood out: children shaped letters accurately and used their understanding of sounds to spell. These are concrete examples of children putting learning to use independently.

The school's CARES curriculum brings together Caring, Achieving, Respecting, Enjoying and Supporting. Its stated aims include imaginative activity, memorable experiences, opportunities to play and enjoyment of the outdoors. These are school-wide curriculum intentions: they give context to the nursery's place within the school, rather than a timetable for an individual session.

Care and Support

Relationships were a strength of early years in April 2022. Adults built close connections with children, while children listened attentively to adults and one another. Their manners, consideration for others and ability to manage their behaviour were also strong. For a young child, those social habits matter alongside the first steps in reading and writing.

Families with concerns about special educational needs and/or disabilities can contact the school's SENCO. This role coordinates additional provision, works with class teachers to review progress and involves external agencies for advice and support. That gives parents a defined contact for discussing their child's needs and the support surrounding them.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. The school's admissions route is through the local authority, with applications made in the academic year before the child starts school.

Where applications exceed available school places, allocation follows the Derbyshire Admissions Policy. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions, and keep the Reception application on your family calendar.

Practical Information

The nursery page provides an enrolment form alongside its nursery prospectus, admissions policy and fees policy. These documents provide the starting point for an enquiry about joining.

General enquiries go through the school office on 01332 772452 or by email to info@stensonfields.derbyshire.sch.uk. There is also a contact form for questions. Paper copies of website information can be requested from the office, giving families another way to read the nursery documents.

FAQs

No. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a place, and families must apply separately for Reception through the local authority.

Early years provision was judged Outstanding at the school's Ofsted inspection on 27 and 28 April 2022. This was an early years judgement within the school inspection, not a separate nursery rating.

In April 2022, children used letter sounds to read unfamiliar words and to spell, and formed letters accurately when writing. Adults demonstrated new learning that children then used in play.

The school's SENCO coordinates SEND provision, works with class teachers and liaises with external agencies. Parents can email SENCO@stensonfields.derbyshire.sch.uk.

Use the nursery enrolment form or contact the school office on 01332 772452. General enquiries can also be sent to info@stensonfields.derbyshire.sch.uk or through the website contact form.
