Nursery at Village Primary Academy

In October 2022, number, language and learning to join a game were concrete features of Village’s early-years teaching. Within Village Primary Academy in Derby, the provision includes Nursery (FS1) and Pre School and forms part of The Harmony Trust. Morning and afternoon sessions give families two distinct parts of the day to choose between.
Funding covers three- and four-year-olds, with a targeted Flying Start route for eligible two-year-olds. Eligibility matters: the younger children’s funding depends on a valid code being provided to the academy.
Three-hour sessions run from 8.40am to 11.40am or from 12.20pm to 3.20pm. These are useful, concrete boundaries for planning childcare around a nursery session.
In October 2022, nursery teaching helped children understand numbers and develop language. Across the early years, phonics teaching was effective, with staff checking how children at the beginning of learning to read were getting on. Across early years and Key Stage 1, however, some extra reading support did not help pupils become fluent quickly enough to keep pace with their peers. Social learning had a practical expression too: children learnt to ask politely to join each other’s games. For parents, these examples connect early learning with both communication and participation in play.
Outdoor provision included trim trails installed to develop early-years children’s physical skills. There was a qualification to the teaching picture: some early-years teachers did not check children’s understanding thoroughly enough. Work to connect early-years learning with the curriculum further through the school was also continuing. These October 2022 findings give a balanced picture of the learning, including the assessment work that needed attention.
A daily snack is included in each session. Where applicable, families may be asked for a voluntary contribution towards snacks, so this is a contribution rather than a compulsory snack payment.
Hot meals are available where offered and carry a charge. They must be booked and paid for ahead of time through ParentPay. That advance arrangement matters for families organising meals alongside their child’s session; contact the academy for current charges.
Attending Village’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through the normal council admissions process by the applicable deadline. Nursery enrolment should therefore be treated as a decision about the early-years experience, with the Reception application planned separately.
Derby families apply through Derby City Council. Families living in another council’s area apply through their own local council, even when choosing a school elsewhere.
Nursery applications go directly to the academy office. Enquiries can be made at info@village.theharmonytrust.org or on 01332 766492.
For three- and four-year-olds, the universal entitlement is 15 funded hours each week; eligible working families may access up to 30. This funding runs during term time and starts in the term following the third birthday. Families using the working-parent entitlement must provide a valid funding code and reconfirm it regularly; the academy cannot reserve a place while eligibility remains unconfirmed.
Flying Start offers some eligible two-year-olds 15 funded hours weekly from the term following their second birthday. Applications go through Derby City Council, and funding is confirmed only after a valid code has been issued and supplied to the academy.
Morning sessions run from 8.40am to 11.40am, and afternoon sessions from 12.20pm to 3.20pm.
