Books to borrow, outdoor play in every weather and small-group Forest School give Whitecross its character. On Watson Street in Derby, this local authority maintained nursery school serves children aged two to four. It is a standalone nursery school, rather than a nursery attached to a primary school, so the next school move needs its own application.
Caterpillars is the two-year-old provision; Butterflies serves three- and four-year-olds. There are up to 16 places for two-year-olds in each morning or afternoon session, alongside 52 three-year-old places per session. Within the younger provision, the Caterpillar Room accommodates eight children, with another eight rising-three places in the Butterfly Room. That gives families a concrete picture of how the youngest children are grouped.
Play has a clear rhythm here. Butterflies combines together time with longer stretches of exploration, teaching groups, tidying, songs and stories. Caterpillars has its own timetable, bringing indoor and outdoor play together with handwashing, snacks, nappy changes and an afternoon choice between sleep and play. Care routines are part of the day.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects learning to everyday experiences: developing conversation, managing feelings, moving confidently and exploring books, numbers, materials and the wider world. Whitecross combines activities guided by adults with play chosen by children. Its communication strategies include giving children thinking time, following their interests and modelling new words, so language develops through interaction rather than constant questioning.
Two outdoor spaces serve Caterpillars and Butterflies, with children using them whatever the weather. Weekly Forest School sessions take small groups into the outdoor area throughout the year to practise using tools and tackling challenges. Indoors, children can choose a library book to borrow each week, extending shared reading into home life.
At the May 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that staff taught vocabulary skilfully and that children showed sustained concentration, including when solving jigsaws and working together with a water pump. These examples make the learning tangible: children practise persistence and cooperation while they play.
Tapestry Learning Journal gives families photographs and observations of their child's experiences, with parents encouraged to contribute activities from home. This creates material for conversations about the nursery day and helps staff build on children's interests.
Food brings children together. Breakfast choices include wholegrain cereal, crumpets and wholemeal toast; lunch can be a packed meal, eaten socially with support from midday play workers. Lunch bags must be named and contain an ice pack, and lunches must exclude nuts and sesame. Fruit snacks prompt conversations about taste, shape and counting. Water is accessible throughout the day, and afternoon nap facilities support younger children who need rest.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), support includes Makaton signing and targets reviewed with parents each term. A sensory room provides space for focused activities or calming time. Wide entrances, garden slopes and accessible toilets are practical features of the single-level site. The May 2024 inspection found safeguarding effective and described support that enabled children with SEND to join activities with their peers.
Attending Whitecross does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery admission and Reception admission are separate processes: families must make a separate application through the normal Reception admissions route and meet its deadline.
Preparation centres on everyday independence. Whitecross works with families on dressing, toileting and using cutlery, giving children opportunities to practise skills they will need at school. Its transition page also links to the StartingReception.co.uk parent guide. These are preparation measures, not an admissions advantage.
Morning sessions run from 9am to noon, with afternoon sessions from 1pm to 4pm. Families booked until 4pm can collect between 3pm and 4pm. Breakfast Club runs from 7.30am to 9am; After-school club runs from 4pm to 5.45pm, with some spaces for younger children.
Funded education covers 15 hours weekly over 38 weeks for three- and four-year-olds. Eligible two-year-olds can receive funded hours, and qualifying families can access up to 30 hours; extended-entitlement codes need reconfirming each term. Extra sessions can be purchased subject to space. Contact the school for current charges.
Enquiries can go through the online contact form, while the Waiting List Registration Form starts nursery registration. The school office can also arrange a visit. Check the term calendar when planning childcare around school holidays.
