Independence and conversation give Bessacarr’s early years its character. In March 2023, children developed resilience and independence, while exchanges with adults helped their language and social development. Those are useful foundations for a child learning to manage tasks and relationships beyond home.
The nursery sits within Bessacarr Primary on Ellers Avenue in Doncaster, with normal entry in September after a child turns three. Its nursery admission number for September 2025 was 52. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good following the inspection on 29 and 30 March 2023; that judgement covers early years within the school.
Language, social development and growing independence are concrete parts of the early years experience here. In March 2023, purposeful adult exchanges supported children’s communication and relationships. Where staff understood the intended learning, they used the surroundings to help children make progress. For parents, the important connection is between what an adult wants a child to learn and how an activity helps them practise it.
Curriculum planning. Some Nursery activities needed clearer learning goals in March 2023. Adults were sometimes uncertain about the intended learning, and the surroundings did not consistently help children achieve it. Early years planning needed more precise steps, with activities and spaces organised around those steps. Some subject leaders also needed to connect later learning more clearly to its early years beginnings. These concerns matter when judging the purpose behind an activity, as well as whether a child enjoys taking part.
In March 2023, early years children received attentive care and had supportive relationships with adults. Their developing independence sat alongside that care: children were learning resilience as well as receiving help.
A school Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator provides a contact for families discussing additional needs. Doncaster’s Early Years Inclusion Service can also support families concerned about access to a mainstream nursery. Children do not have to be toilet trained to enter a school nursery.
Lunches are supplied by Apetito, and families can select meals ahead through School Grid. Alongside a vegetarian choice and the main dish, sandwiches are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays; jacket potatoes with fillings are options on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Nursery meals are charged separately. This gives families a practical choice to make alongside their child’s attendance arrangements.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application for the school they want their child to attend; familiarity with Bessacarr should not be treated as an admission entitlement.
For September 2027 Reception entry, applications can be made online through Doncaster Council from September 2026, with a first closing date of 15 January 2027. Keep that application separate from arrangements for the nursery place.
The universal early education entitlement for three- and four-year-olds is 15 hours each week over 38 weeks, during term time. Eligible working families can receive 30 hours, but individual settings decide whether to offer those places. Entitlement does not guarantee a particular attendance pattern.
Applications for the 15-hour universal nursery entitlement go through Doncaster Council’s online admissions service. For extended entitlement, contact the school to check availability and follow its application process. For school enquiries, contact admin-bessacarr@empoweringmindsmat.uk or telephone 01302 535110. Use pedestrian access on the school site rather than crossing the car park, and tell staff about any injury or accident that happened outside school.
