Nursery at Carcroft Primary School

Play, language and learning to share give Carcroft's nursery its character. Children build towers together, explore resources with more than one possible use, and practise moving safely around the school field. These are small experiences with practical purpose: expressing an idea, waiting for a turn and managing space alongside other children.
Carcroft Primary School's nursery is known as F1 or FS1 and sits within the Foundation Unit in Carcroft, Doncaster. It caters for three-year-olds. At the inspection on 22 and 23 May 2024, Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Good. That judgement covers the early years phase within the school.
Language has a clear place in the learning. In May 2024, classroom activities and experiences beyond the classroom helped children extend their vocabulary. Adults supported learning through play, while resources that could be used in different ways encouraged children to make decisions and develop imaginative ideas. The emphasis gives children opportunities to talk about what they are doing rather than simply complete an adult's task.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) connects physical development with learning to manage feelings and relationships. An April 2026 nursery PE session brought those strands together through group games and dancing on the field. Children practised following instructions and recognising boundaries, with movement activities creating opportunities for coordination and taking turns.
Sharing is also taught through concrete play. In November 2023, nursery children passed a ball between them and took turns adding bricks to a tower. When it collapsed, they tried again. The activity made cooperation something children could practise together, with a visible result.
Settling starts before the first session. Families receive a letter, followed by an arranged home visit to exchange information with nursery staff. An open session then brings the child and parent into the Foundation Unit to meet the team. This gives families two distinct opportunities to introduce their child and begin building familiarity.
By May 2024, clear routines helped early-years children understand expectations and stay absorbed in activities. Adults were trained to support their play. For questions about special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), families can contact the school's inclusion team on 01302 722353. This provides a direct route for discussing a child's needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the deadline for their entry year. The application route is Doncaster Council's online admissions service.
Preparation for the next stage is a separate matter. The nursery's April 2026 PE experience formed part of preparation for Reception: children practised responding to adult instructions and using the field alongside others. Familiarity and participation help prepare children for change; they do not secure admission.
Two attendance patterns have distinct collection times. The 15-hour afternoon session runs from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Children eligible for the 30-hour pattern attend from 8:40am to 3:10pm. Families should build their collection arrangements around the pattern their child attends, since the afternoon-only session finishes later.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school on 01302 722353. The home visit and Foundation Unit open session are arranged as part of starting nursery, giving parents a practical introduction to the staff and setting before attendance begins.
