Learning to ask for help is a defining part of nursery life at Green Top. Conversation runs through activities, with adults encouraging complete sentences so children can explain what they need and cooperate with their friends. Independence matters too.
The nursery forms part of Green Top primary school on Middlebrook Lane in Thorne. Provision begins at age three. Ofsted’s June 2026 inspection judged the school’s early years provision to be a Strong standard; this is an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Small learning steps give the day its educational direction. Adults check how children are progressing and adjust the curriculum to their needs. Children who fall behind receive prompt help, making support part of their learning rather than something deferred until later.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) brings together learning and growing independence. Here, that includes developing early reading, mathematics and writing alongside learning how to follow routines. Across early years, children practise writing through letters addressed to story characters. That gives the activity a purpose beyond forming letters on a page.
Language receives sustained attention in Nursery. Adults expect children to use complete sentences, helping them build the words and confidence needed to request help and work with other children. Everyday routines also involve taking responsibility for resources: early years children put equipment away after using it.
An outdoor area provides another place to play and explore. In May 2023, nursery children explored it during warmer weather, played games with friends and took part in a Baby Bunnies afternoon. These examples show learning extending beyond adult-directed writing and number activities, with time for shared play and exploration.
Warm relationships help nursery children settle quickly. Familiar routines and clear expectations support their growing independence, helping them feel secure enough to take part in learning. The emphasis on asking for help is useful here: communication is a practical care skill as well as a learning goal.
Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), and disadvantaged children, participate across the early years learning areas. Adults make sure they can engage with the activities, including work on basic reading, mathematics and writing skills. Progress checks lead to timely additional help when needed.
For the 2019 nursery intake, homemade hot lunches were offered. A September 2022 nursery reminder also asked families to label packed lunches and water bottles, alongside clothing and other belongings.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the deadline for their entry year.
For September 2024 entry, applications went through Doncaster’s primary admissions service, with a closing date of 15 January. That was a past admissions cycle. Treat the Reception application as a separate family task, rather than assuming a nursery place carries forward.
Nursery enquiries can be made by telephone on 01405 813181. Green Top is on Middlebrook Lane, Thorne, Doncaster, DN8 5LB.
Clearly naming belongings is a useful preparation step. The nursery’s September 2022 instruction covered packed lunches, clothing, water bottles and other items brought in, helping families keep track of possessions used during the day.
