Mud, worms and rainbows give Robins its distinctive flavour. Hayfield Lane Primary School's nursery, in Auckley, starts from age three and sits within the school's foundation stage as F1. Its class identity is Robins, with learning examples that connect young children to the natural world.
This is the school's own nursery provision. For parents, the useful distinction is between choosing these early experiences and applying for a school place later: the nursery decision stands on its own. Morning and afternoon sessions provide two clearly defined parts of the day.
Nature supplies concrete subjects for learning. Robins' activities in the 2023–2024 class archive include Wanderlust, with themes involving worms, mud and rainbows. The 2022–2023 archive also brings together apples, spiders, flowers and wind. These are specific things for young children to notice and discuss, giving families a clearer picture of the learning themes than a broad curriculum label alone.
Other Robins themes in 2022–2023 included Traditional Tales, Dinosaurs and Around the World. Together, those examples show learning extending from familiar stories to animals and places. They describe past class activities rather than a fixed timetable for a new starter.
Language and independence are central to the early-years experience. At the May 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that children were learning to communicate confidently and do things for themselves, while adults extended their vocabulary. In everyday parent language, that means developing the words to explain an idea, join a conversation and express a need. The early years foundation stage (EYFS) work also included encouraging children to describe their activities using mathematical vocabulary, connecting number language with what they were doing.
In May 2023, early-years children had affectionate, positive connections with adults, and vocabulary development supported their social learning as well as early reading. Those relationships matter alongside the learning itself: communication helps children take part with other people, rather than simply recognise new words.
Parents have also been involved in Robins activities. The 2023–2024 archive includes parent stay-and-play events, including one at Easter, giving families an opportunity to participate in class experiences. New Food Friday appears among Robins activities too, adding food to the class's named experiences.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place at Hayfield Lane Primary School. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat that application as a separate task, even while your child attends Robins.
The school's admission arrangements page directs families to Doncaster Council's primary admissions information. Familiarity with the nursery and choosing a Reception place are separate matters; plan for both.
Morning nursery runs from 8.45am to 11.45am; the afternoon session runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. These defined windows make the collection time an essential part of planning the family day.
A September 2025 admissions notice offered 15-hour nursery places with the option of purchasing additional sessions. That notice relates to a past admissions cycle. The school also has a Buying full days in Nursery section. For nursery enquiries and current charges, contact the school office on 01302770427 or email office@hayfieldlane.co.uk.
