At a Glance

Purposeful play and predictable routines give Intake’s nursery its character. Children begin from age 3 within Intake Primary Academy on Sidney Road in Doncaster, with 26 places in the morning session. This is a school nursery with a short, clearly defined day: a practical fit for families seeking a morning of early learning.

In May 2026, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision to meet the Strong standard. That judgement covers early years within the school. Children were confident in exploring and increasingly able to do things independently, giving parents a useful picture of the habits being developed alongside early learning.

The Nursery Day

From 9am to noon, learning combines play with planned experiences. The early years foundation stage (EYFS) develops the beginnings of language, number understanding and physical skills. Activities have a learning purpose and offer challenge, so play gives children opportunities to practise new skills.

Language gets close attention. Adults demonstrate how to use words and introduce vocabulary while children play and follow familiar routines. Early phonics also forms part of the learning. These experiences build the foundations for understanding language and beginning to read.

Outdoor learning gives children further chances to explore and use their skills. Staff assess each child’s existing knowledge and abilities, then decide what should come next. They also adjust provision to suit the group. In May 2026, teaching in early years was effective, and adaptations helped children take part while retaining suitable challenge.

Care and Support

Settling starts with a nursery meet and greet. New children can become familiar with their learning surroundings and the adults who will work with them; parents meet the team and ask questions. Arrangements are sent to new families. It is a useful first introduction before the nursery routine begins.

Consistent routines and regular conversations with parents help children settle. In May 2026, children settled quickly with support from partnerships between staff and families. Staff also adapted early years activities to reduce obstacles to learning, helping children with differing needs participate.

The school’s Inclusion Team includes a SEND coordinator and a Safeguarding and Family Liaison Officer. Parents can first discuss concerns with the class teacher, then arrange a further meeting through school. Across the school, Magic Breakfast provides a morning choice of toast or a bagel, while Fruit for schools offers fresh fruit at breaktime.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no priority within the admissions criteria. Families must make a separate Reception application through Doncaster Council using their MyDoncaster account. Treat that application as a distinct step, even when your child already attends nursery.

A meet and greet for new Reception children introduces their learning surroundings and adults, with parents able to meet the team too. This supports familiarity with the next stage; it does not change the admissions position.

Practical Information

Morning hours. The nursery session runs from 9am to 12pm. Families need to plan childcare around the noon finish.

For enquiries, contact the academy office on 01302 344743 or admin@astreaintake.org. Prospective parents can arrange a school visit by telephone before applying, providing an opportunity to meet the setting and discuss their child’s start.
