Songs, stories and acting out familiar tales give Kirkby Avenue’s nursery its character. Seedling Class is the school’s nursery provision in Bentley, Doncaster, with an emphasis on helping children communicate and learn to spend time together. Those social foundations matter alongside the first steps in reading and maths.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 17 and 18 June 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Storytelling takes several forms here: children listen to stories, sing and use role play to recreate what they have heard. Acting out a tale gives them another way to explore its characters and practise speaking. In June 2025, early years staff established routines promptly and placed clear emphasis on conversation and interaction between children.
Read Write Inc. introduces phonics when nursery children are ready. At that point, teaching includes 2 or 3 set one sounds each week, alongside 2 or three lessons developing listening skills. Readiness is the important condition. Maths Meetings also begin in Nursery, giving children opportunities to practise skills and return to earlier learning.
For early writing, the EYFS approach uses the Early Years Framework, Development Matters and the school’s own Writing Framework. Teaching includes how to hold equipment and sit for writing, with daily handwriting teaching across EYFS. Together, these activities connect language, listening and the physical skills involved in making marks.
Curriculum order. In June 2025, some early years learning was arranged in an order that made it harder for children to link new ideas with earlier work. Children consequently developed knowledge less securely than they could. The required improvement was to organise learning so children could consolidate it before tackling another topic.
Getting to know families begins before children start. In June 2025, early years staff made substantial efforts to understand children and their families ahead of entry. That gives parents a useful opportunity to explain their child’s needs before the first session.
Across the school, support staff can provide individual emotional support, including a morning Meet and Greet to help a child settle. The wider Inclusion Team works with the Mental Health, Pastoral and Social Interventions Manager, while staff raise concerns with the SENCo or mental health lead. For a family dealing with separation worries or other emotional difficulties, this provides a route for discussing support rather than leaving those concerns solely within the classroom.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. The City of Doncaster Council is responsible for admission arrangements and is the contact for admissions and appeals.
Keep that application separate from the nursery decision: a child’s familiarity with school life does not itself secure their next place. Choosing nursery for its daily experience and completing the Reception application are two distinct steps.
Nursery session times vary, so the main school timetable should not be treated as the nursery timetable. This distinction matters when planning collection and other childcare.

Early years provision was graded Good on 17 and 18 June 2025. Some curriculum areas needed a clearer learning sequence so children could consolidate knowledge before moving to new topics.
