Rhythm, rhyme and listening to everyday sounds give Lakeside’s nursery mornings a clear language focus. A daily early phonics session sits within the school’s Foundation Stage provision on Sandy Lane, Doncaster. Children begin learning at 8:30am and leave before lunch, making this a morning nursery arrangement for families planning the rest of their day.
The nursery has a teacher and higher-level teaching assistant support, with SEND support shared across Early Years. That gives parents distinct teaching and support roles to work with. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 23 and 24 April 2024; this judgement covers early years within the school rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Early phonics starts with sounds children can hear, alongside rhythm and rhyme. Children also practise putting sounds together and separating them through sound talk. The emphasis is on listening and spoken sounds, giving parents a concrete picture of the nursery’s daily preparation for reading.
Communication matters beyond that session. In April 2024, adults gave particular attention to children’s language development, and this work was generally successful. For a young child, that means adult interaction is part of the learning, alongside the phonics activity itself.
Outdoor learning has its own area, but it also carries a specific caution. In April 2024, some outdoor activities did not match children’s next learning steps closely enough, reducing what children gained from them. Outdoor learning. The improvement needed was a closer match between activities and individual learning needs. Families should weigh that finding alongside the positive evidence about language work.
Warm interactions between adults and children were an early years strength in April 2024. Parents were also involved successfully in their children’s learning, helping them continue that learning at home. These findings connect the care children receive with the adults supporting them beyond the nursery session.
For additional needs, Lakeside uses the SEND Graduated Approach. Support can include learning in smaller groups, visual reminders and adults modelling language. The school’s approach moves through assessing needs, planning help, putting it into practice and reviewing the result, so support can change in response to the child.
Parents contribute to SEND targets and termly reviews. The school can involve speech and language therapists or educational psychologists when needed, bringing specialist advice into decisions about support. Its buildings are wheelchair accessible, with changing and toilet facilities designed for children with disabilities: practical features that matter alongside adaptations to teaching.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Doncaster Council handles the application route signposted by the school.
Transition support is a separate matter. Lakeside arranges meetings and class transition days when children change class or school. Children with SEN may also have extra familiarisation visits, social stories or visits involving parents. These arrangements help prepare children for change; they do not secure admission.
Doors open at 8:25am, nursery learning begins at 8:30am and collection is at 11:30am, before lunch. The morning finish is the key practical consideration for families arranging work or care later in the day.
