Butterflies, growing seeds and stories give the early years learning at Woodlands a concrete character. In March 2024, children could describe how a butterfly develops and explain seed growth, giving them knowledge to build on in science. Learning had substance even at this early stage.
The nursery belongs to Outwood Primary Academy Woodlands, on The Crescent in Woodlands, Doncaster, where the school's age range starts at three. Ofsted graded the school's early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 20 and 21 March 2024. That judgement covers the early years phase, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Reading and number were clear strengths of the early years provision in March 2024. Phonics, learning the sounds used in reading, was taught by adults with specialist expertise. Reading books used sounds children had already learned, allowing them to practise familiar material and develop fluency. The connection between teaching and the books children read mattered: practice reinforced what they knew.
Stories brought another dimension. Adults shared carefully selected texts and demonstrated how to read them, while children enjoyed listening. This combined attention to reading technique with pleasure in stories. For parents, those are two distinct parts of the early reading experience: recognising sounds and wanting to hear what happens next.
Number learning involved repeated opportunities to explore mathematical ideas with adult help. Alongside the butterfly and seed examples, this shows an early years curriculum with specific knowledge to acquire and explain. In March 2024, children understood their learning in depth and were eager to engage with it.
Outwood's family support offer includes individual contact or a home visit for children joining a school, whichever year group they enter. That creates an opportunity to discuss the child's individual needs when they join.
The trust also describes support for speech and language both at school and at home, alongside work with parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Its family support offer aims to give parents a voice in the help their child receives. Where families face specific difficulties, it includes coordination with several agencies, so support can address more than classroom learning alone.
Reception admission is separate. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline; academy admissions are administered by the local authority. For Woodlands, that authority is Doncaster.
Keep the nursery decision and the Reception application distinct. Choosing this nursery is a decision about early learning and care, while the later school application remains a separate step for the family.
The school address is The Crescent, Woodlands, Doncaster, DN6 7RG. For nursery enquiries, contact Outwood Primary Academy Woodlands on 01302722367.
