Nursery at Plover Primary School

Songs, stories and a real double-decker bus give Plover’s nursery learning its character. The nursery belongs to Plover Primary School on Coniston Road in Intake, Doncaster, and forms part of its early years provision. Everyday language is a clear focus: in November 2024, nursery children developed vocabulary through regular conversations with adults, singing and shared stories.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good following its inspection on 5 and 6 November 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. For parents, the nursery-specific detail about conversation and books gives a more useful picture of learning than the grade alone.
Plover uses learning expeditions, connecting knowledge and skills across subjects and mapping them to the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. For a parent, that means a theme can connect several kinds of learning rather than sitting within a single subject. Crew sessions are adapted for early years, with opportunities to discuss feelings and reflect on the day. Learning and relationships have their own place in the routine.
Real experiences provide material to talk about. In January 2026, a parent who drove buses brought a double-decker to the early years children. They explored the vehicle, sang together and learned about journeys, the driver’s work and safe movement. A familiar community service became something children could investigate directly.
Stories also connect with learning about the world. In March 2021, the early years expedition Where do bears live? explored bears’ food, habitats and activities, ending with a teddy bears picnic. Goldilocks was among the stories used. This was a specific past project, showing how a story theme could extend into questions about animals.
Outdoor experiences have included woods visits for nursery groups in October 2023. These took learning beyond the classroom. During November 2024, early years children also met the fire brigade and learned about responsible behaviour around fireworks, connecting safety messages with people who work in the community.
Crew gives children time to express feelings, with the approach adjusted for younger learners. The school describes a crew leader as a trusted adult and the group as a consistent peer community. That offers a framework for relationships alongside classroom learning.
Support for special educational needs and disabilities follows the school’s Graduated Response process. Teaching can be adapted, adult-led interventions target specific skills, and children can demonstrate understanding in different ways when writing presents a barrier. The practical implication is that written work need not be the only way a child shows what they know.
Families have also been invited to share learning. An October 2023 harvest celebration included children’s pictures and songs, with food donations supporting Plover Pantry. It gave parents a concrete way to participate in the children’s work.
Attending Plover’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Nursery and Reception admissions are separate: families must make a fresh Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
The nursery has included a 15-hour group, documented in September 2023. This establishes a past attendance pattern, rather than a current funding entitlement or booking offer.
