Space to choose an activity, concentrate on it and learn to share gives Rosedale’s nursery its character. Children have access to two large indoor spaces alongside Reception pupils, with quieter areas for teaching in smaller groups or individually. Outdoor provision and the school grounds extend the places where children can play and learn.
The nursery has 45 places and caters for children from age 3 at Rosedale Primary School in Scawsby, Doncaster. It forms part of the school’s early years provision. Ofsted graded early years Good at the inspection on 7 and 8 February 2024; that is an early years judgement within the school inspection, rather than a separate nursery rating.
Choice and adult guidance work together here. In February 2024, children sustained their attention during activities they had selected, while adults helped their learning progress without interrupting their enjoyment. Nursery routines were clear, and children concentrated during both play and work. This gives parents a useful picture of the balance: children pursue an interest, with adults helping them take it further.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) includes learning about relationships and the world around children. At Rosedale, nursery children learn about friendship, family and the people they can turn to for help. Taking turns, respecting personal space and asking permission are taught from this age. These are practical skills for sharing a play space.
Geography starts with something familiar: in EYFS, children make simple maps showing their bedrooms from above. It connects an early mapping idea to a place they know. The two indoor spaces offer room for activities alongside quieter teaching, while outdoor provision gives children another setting for learning. The EYFS programme has also included a Harvest Festival and Spooky Welly Walk in October 2025, followed by a Christmas Concert that December.
Independence includes managing a wait. In February 2024, early years children asked politely to share equipment and showed restraint while waiting their turn. Adults supported their learning sensitively, helping children stay involved in their chosen activity.
For the September 2026 nursery intake, a Stay and Play event was scheduled in June 2026. Once a place is allocated, the school contacts families to discuss starting arrangements, transition and any special educational needs. Families can contact the school’s special educational needs coordinator through the main office, giving them a direct route to discuss concerns.
Lunch brings a daily choice of a sandwich, jacket potato, vegetarian dish or main meal, identified by a coloured band. Contact the school for current meal charges. Children under five can receive free milk through Cool Milk, but parents must register even when their child qualifies. EYFS family learning events and learning showcases have also provided opportunities for parents to take part in early years activities.
Attending Rosedale’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal City of Doncaster Council process by the applicable deadline.
Children can mix with peers who may join them in Reception. That provides social familiarity for the next stage; it does not secure admission. Keep the application process separate from the benefits of knowing other children.
Families can discuss flexible arrangements for 15 or 30 hours, including morning sessions, afternoons and blocks of days. Full days are also offered as a nursery option. All 3-year-olds are eligible for 15 funded hours; eligibility for 30 hours is discussed with the school. This flexibility lets families consider how to distribute their entitlement across sessions.
