Bear Class gives Sandringham’s nursery a storybook identity: bears feature in its class name, and featured in reading and early sorting activities in the 2020 nursery plans. The nursery is part of Sandringham Primary School on Sandringham Road, Doncaster. Children can start from age three. In September 2020, the nursery had 52 places; that figure belongs to that period.
For families, the clearest practical feature is the choice of morning and afternoon sessions. Each has its own start and finish, making the nursery session a distinct part of the school day.
Stories connect several kinds of learning in the 2020 nursery plans. Brown Bear and Dear Zoo sit alongside animal dressing-up, making patterns and sharing books. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together communication, physical skills, relationships and early learning: here, children practise these through talking, making, playing and becoming more independent.
We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and The Very Hungry Caterpillar provide further themes. A pretend grocer’s shop gives children food to sort and buy for the caterpillar, linking imaginative play with mathematical language. Maths Meetings and Maths Mastery accompany counting, matching objects and comparing quantities. These are practical ways to explore what numbers mean.
Finger-gym and Playdough Disco sit alongside cutting practice and drawing. Children make marks indoors and outside, while seasonal exploration includes looking for changes in the weather and signs of spring. The emphasis reaches beyond pencil work: handling tools, moving fingers and putting on a coat all feature in the learning.
Daily stories and rhymes give listening a regular place. The plans also include a rhyme sent home each week, connecting classroom language activities with something parents and children can repeat together.
The September 2020 settling arrangements included play sessions with parents, giving children time to meet the nursery teacher and other adults while a familiar carer stayed alongside them. The teacher also visited children at home or in another nursery setting, with extra transition visits possible when needed.
The 2020 nursery plans included care routines: adults modelling handwashing and toilet routines, and children practising putting on their coats. Ordinary tasks formed part of learning independence.
Across the school, the SEND aims include working with parents and taking account of children’s views and interests. The Senior Mental Health Lead and SEND coordinator work together with outside professionals, while the Thrive Approach supports the school’s work on emotional wellbeing. These are school-wide arrangements, rather than a separate nursery service.
Attending Sandringham’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. City of Doncaster Council administers applications, including nursery and primary admission.
The 2020 transition arrangements included Reception play sessions and lunch with parents, teacher visits to the child’s nursery setting and additional visits according to need. Familiarisation helps children prepare for a different classroom; it does not secure admission.
Morning nursery runs from 8.30am to 11.30am; afternoon nursery runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Doors or gates open for around 10 minutes at the start, and around 10 minutes before the session finishes. These windows help families plan drop-off and collection around the session boundaries.
Visits can be arranged by telephone or through the school office. For nursery enquiries, call 01302 361880 or email admin@sandringham.elp.org.uk.
