Thirty hours a week gives this school nursery its practical starting point. Scawthorpe Castle Hills Primary Academy provides nursery education within its primary setting on Jossey Lane in Scawthorpe, Doncaster. Children normally join in September after turning three; an earlier start in the following term depends on sufficient places being available.
For families, this combines a nursery place with access to the academy’s wider support structure. The SENDCo coordinates additional support across the academy, working with families, staff and specialist professionals. Nursery is the beginning of school life here, but choosing it and securing a Reception place are separate decisions.
Outdoor learning has a named approach: Forest School. Across the academy, all pupils can access it over the year through class sessions, individual work and targeted support, as well as after-school clubs. Typical activities include building dens, cooking outdoors and sharing stories around a fire. These bring practical tasks and conversation together. The school aims to develop confidence, communication and teamwork through this approach.
Staff are expected to notice emerging difficulties and respond early, while keeping track of children’s development. Support is intended to enable children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) to participate alongside their peers, rather than making additional help a separate experience from everyday learning.
Parents can raise developmental concerns at any time. The SENDCo works with staff, families and professionals to assess what a child needs; support may involve specialist resources, individual help or work in a small group. Speech and Language Therapists and Educational Psychologists are among the outside specialists involved across the academy.
An assess, plan, do, review cycle gives support a sequence: identify the need, agree the help, put it into practice and check its effect. For children receiving SEN support, parents meet with the teacher or key worker three times each year, with SENDCo involvement where appropriate. That creates recurring opportunities to adjust the plan with the family.
Food brought onto the premises must be nut-free. This is a rule for the whole academy, so it matters when preparing anything a nursery child brings from home.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal Doncaster primary admissions route and meet the normal application deadline.
Additional transition support for children with SEND includes visits, staff meetings and information sharing. Its purpose is to prepare the child and those supporting them for the next stage; it does not secure admission.
Session allocation rests with the headteacher. Parents’ preferences are considered, but the preferred session cannot always be accommodated. Families should factor that constraint into their childcare planning.
