At a Glance

Muddy Monday gives Warmsworth’s nursery a distinctive thread: children explore the school grounds, with woodland and a poly tunnel among their learning spaces. Outdoor experiences connect with stories, conversation and practical discovery indoors.

Foundation Stage One is the school’s nursery provision on Mill Lane in Warmsworth, Doncaster. It takes children from age three, normally starting in September following their third birthday; earlier entry in the following term depends on spare places. There are up to 26 places in each of the morning and afternoon groups. Children attend five sessions across Monday to Friday.

Ofsted graded the school’s early years Outstanding following inspection visits on 3 and 4 December 2024 and 12 March 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together learning to communicate, manage feelings and move confidently with early reading, writing, number work, creativity and understanding the world. Here, daily learning includes stories, phonics, maths and physical activity. Little Wandle introduces early reading through Rhyme Time, while puppets and story sacks give children ways to retell what they hear.

The published 2025–2026 nursery plans made those ideas tangible. Play dough disco and threading were planned to exercise small hand movements; outdoor activities included trikes on the bike track and climbing. Muddy Monday takes learning into the grounds. The 2025–2026 plan included collecting apples in the orchard and gathering natural materials to help hedgehogs prepare nests, giving children something concrete to describe, compare and discuss.

Imaginative play followed the themes in those 2025–2026 plans. A veterinary surgery, insect play tray and pond life water tray were planned to support learning about animals and their development, alongside rearing and observing ladybirds. Choosing resources and asking adults for help were also included, making independence part of the planned learning.

At the December 2024 and March 2025 inspection, early-years children used character play to strengthen story recall and water-tray experiments to revisit knowledge about materials. However, the school-wide early-reading findings included books that were sometimes poorly matched to the sounds pupils knew, slowing reading development for some, including pupils with SEND. This concern was not identified specifically as a nursery finding.

Care and Support

Familiar experiences featured in the published 2025–2026 nursery plan. It included family photographs for conversation and home-corner play, alongside learning classmates’ names and practising separation from grown-ups. The school says the school will try to arrange a home visit before children start; this is an intention rather than a guaranteed appointment.

Visual timetables help children understand the day, and now-and-next boards support those with additional needs. THRIVE assessments inform work on emotional regulation and communication. The early-years team also makes referrals for speech and language therapy, occupational therapy or physiotherapy according to children’s needs.

Parents can discuss progress with staff beyond the autumn and spring parent evenings. Curriculum workshops provide another way to understand the learning. For drinks, children are encouraged to have water, and milk can be ordered through Cool Milk; children under five qualify for free milk.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or confer priority under the supplied admission arrangements. Families must make a separate application through Doncaster Local Authority, following the normal admissions timetable. Nursery attendance is not among the listed oversubscription criteria.

Transition preparation has a different purpose. The nursery’s published 2025–2026 summer plan included visiting the next classroom and asking practical questions, such as where coats belong. These activities were intended to build familiarity with the next setting; they do not change how places are allocated.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoons run from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. This is a part-time model, so the session choice matters when arranging family routines.

Prospective families are encouraged to visit. Enquiries can go to the school office on 01302 852200 or secretary@warmsworthschool.co.uk. The school dress code includes a burgundy or maroon cardigan or sweatshirt with a white shirt or polo shirt. Children must not be dropped off or collected in the school car park.
