Rhyme, colour mixing and learning to manage feelings give West Road’s nursery its character. This is the school’s own provision in Moorends, Doncaster, with some places for two-year-olds. Morning and afternoon sessions each last three hours, giving the nursery day a clear shape.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 4 and 5 February 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The nursery’s learning priorities combine practical independence with language: the school aims for children to discuss stories, handle disagreements and become more confident in caring for themselves.
Play has a learning purpose here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together communication, movement and emotional development, alongside early literacy, maths, creativity and understanding the world. For parents, that means learning extends beyond recognising letters or counting: talking with another child and managing a pencil matter too.
Essential Letters and Sounds provides the phonics approach. Nursery concentrates on Phase 1, including alliteration and rhyming, so children practise hearing patterns in language. Singing and discussing stories sit alongside this work. The school’s nursery expectations include recognising matching initial sounds and showing numbers up to five with their fingers.
Creative work includes painting, construction and modelling, with learning both outside and indoors. Children can explore colour mixtures and materials while developing hand control. West Best Learning Powers characters are introduced from nursery; the school uses them to help children take responsibility for learning.
In February 2025, early years activities were designed to extend children’s exploration of ideas, and staff used opportunities to expand vocabulary. The curriculum had been planned carefully. These findings give substance to the combination of purposeful play and adult interaction.
Independence is a gradual learning goal. Nursery expectations include managing clothes and toileting, while the practical arrangements allow families to supply nappies and wipes when needed. That makes the distinction between an eventual goal and a child’s immediate care needs useful.
The 2024-2025 arrangements included a family visit and an individual starting date for new nursery children. Daily fruit and milk were part of the routine, with milk registration through Cool Milk. Children under five received milk free. Families were asked to provide water in a labelled bottle; children attending for 30 hours needed a packed lunch if they were not taking a school lunch. The school is nut free.
Early identification of special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) was a strength of the early years staffing in February 2025: staff had training to recognise possible needs so support could begin promptly. The school’s inclusion team has a SENDCO and a family support worker. Its inclusion spaces include The Sensory Room and The Meadow, although these are school facilities rather than nursery-specific rooms.
Safeguarding records. In February 2025, school safeguarding arrangements were effective, but records sometimes omitted details of actions taken. Children remained safe; the school was required to make the written account complete.
Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as separate decisions.
There is continuity in the learning: in February 2025, the early years curriculum linked nursery learning securely with the next stage. Educational continuity does not settle admission.

The 2024-2025 arrangements used the Nursery entrance for both collection and drop-off. Collection was restricted to adults on the contact list, with families asked to notify school of a change. Nursery children wore school uniform but did not need a PE kit. Labelled spare clothes and footwear children could fasten themselves supported messy play and growing independence.
