Nursery at Woodfield Primary School

Play with a clear learning purpose defines Woodfield’s early years provision. Children explore ideas through activities shaped around their needs, with adults developing language and identifying the next steps in learning. The nursery belongs to Woodfield Primary School on Gurney Road in Balby, Doncaster, where the school’s age range starts at three.
At the February 2025 Ofsted inspection, early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separate nursery inspection.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the curriculum framework. In parent language, Woodfield’s approach means learning through play, starting with the skills and interests children already bring. Teachers plan around those starting points, so children’s existing experiences help shape what they learn next. Five curriculum goals draw together the areas of the early years framework.
Purposeful play has adult direction behind it. In February 2025, early years staff understood each child’s next learning steps and developed children’s language skilfully. Activities gave children opportunities to explore curriculum ideas through play, while children also learned and played successfully together. For parents, this connects the social side of nursery with planned learning: conversation and shared activity both have a role.
Training supports that approach. New members of the early years team received detailed guidance and training, helping staff respond consistently to children’s learning and development needs.
Starting nursery involved a staggered introduction for the September 2026 intake, with families receiving individual information about their child’s start. This gave parents a specific starting arrangement to organise around.
Woodfield uses an attachment-aware approach across the school. Staff help children recognise emotions and learn ways to manage them safely. The school aims to adapt teaching to children’s emotional needs, making relationships part of its approach to learning.
For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), parents can contact a SENCO or deputy SENCO. Both work from the Inclusion/Learning Mentor’s Room. Families contribute to support-plan reviews through a questionnaire, giving them a direct opportunity to explain their child’s needs.
Two February 2025 improvement points were school-wide: some writing activities needed better adaptation for pupils with SEND, and checks did not always spot smaller weaknesses promptly. These were not identified specifically as nursery concerns, but families considering additional support should understand their scope.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Doncaster Council’s school admissions service is the application route; choosing the nursery should therefore be a decision about the nursery experience itself, with the later application treated separately.
Greggs Breakfast Clubs funding supports a free daily breakfast club that includes nursery children. It opens at 8am, with arrival between 8:00am and 8:05am through the Y3/4 doors beside the KS2 playground. Breakfast includes toast, juice and cereal. Booking is through the school’s admin team, and the office handles ingredient and allergy enquiries.
Prospective parents can arrange a visit. Contact the school on 01302853289 to discuss visiting the early years provision.
