At a Glance

Garden play, shared fruit and stories give Dorking Nursery School’s day its shape. Nursery education is the school’s whole purpose here: children aged two to five attend its West Street site, with separate 2-3s and 3-5s provision alongside a specialist class. Approximately 30 children are in the younger nursery at any one time.

The April 2026 Ofsted inspection graded inclusion and achievement Strong standard, with curriculum and teaching at Expected standard; safeguarding standards were met. That distinction matters: children’s progress and individual support were strengths, while teaching had a specific point to address.

The Nursery Day

Choice occupies a substantial part of the example 3-5s morning. Children can play in the garden or indoors, with an adult-directed activity shaped around their interests and learning needs. Tidying follows, then group time brings fruit, stories, music, drama and movement. It gives the session a recognisable rhythm while leaving room for children to pursue an interest.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) covers seven areas of development. In parent terms, learning includes managing feelings, communicating, moving confidently and developing early reading and mathematical understanding. Traditional rhymes and fairy tales help children explore how stories work and how words sound. A woodland area adds natural surroundings to the 3-5s learning spaces, while younger children have opportunities to join Woodland Adventure.

Teaching focus. In April 2026, some activities lacked a sufficiently precise learning objective, leaving opportunities to strengthen vocabulary and concepts unused. The improvement needed was clearer focus in staff interactions, so enjoyable activity translates consistently into new understanding.

Care and Support

Key workers provide parents with detailed progress reports across the EYFS areas. A whiteboard in the library area also explains the planned adult activity, giving families a practical way to connect the day’s learning with conversations at home.

Zebedees supplies hot lunches and caters for alternative diets. Orders are placed on Thursday lunchtime for the following week, so changes need advance notice. In April 2026, shared lunchtime service encouraged independent eating and table manners, with adults helping children use cutlery and eat safely. Putting on coats and washing hands also formed part of learning to manage everyday care.

Support can take place in the mainstream classroom or specialist class. The latter has a quieter dedicated room, access to outdoor play and a higher proportion of adults to children. A Speech and Language Therapist supports the team for one session each week. Depending on individual needs, strategies include pictorial timetables, Attention Autism and Makaton, which pairs signs with speech. Daily access to soft play creates further opportunities for interaction.

Moving On to Reception

Attending nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing nursery and applying for a school place as separate decisions.

Preparation also happens through ordinary routines. In April 2026, children were developing confidence in expressing opinions, cooperating with others and managing small responsibilities. Those skills help them take part in their next classroom; they do not confer an admissions advantage.

Practical Information

Provision runs during term time, following Surrey’s school holiday pattern. For the 3-5s, morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am and afternoons from 12:30pm to 3:30pm, Monday to Friday. Funded sessions require attendance on five days. The first 15 hours are arranged across five mornings or five afternoons; 30-hour places run from 8:45am to 2:45pm, subject to eligibility for additional entitlement.

Extra hours are charged and depend on availability. Lunch and the additional 45 minutes to 3:30pm carry separate charges for 30-hour places. Ask the school for current charges. Younger children are normally expected to attend at least three sessions each week.

Parking. There is no parking on site. Allow for the walk from a town centre public car park when planning collection. Logo T-shirts and sweatshirts can be purchased. For enquiries, call 01306 882397 or email admin@dorking.surrey.sch.uk; tours can be booked.
