Dough disco, baking and books from the mobile library give Beeford’s early years provision a practical character. Nursery belongs to the Foundation Stage Unit (FSU) at Beeford Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, on Main Street in Beeford. It is an introduction to school life built around play and adult guidance.
Compassion, Creation and Friendship are the school’s chosen Christian values. In early years, the Buckets of Kindness approach puts those ideas into everyday interactions, with the aim of helping children consider other people’s feelings and care for their surroundings.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning to communicate, move and manage relationships with early number work, literacy, creative activity and discovering the world. Adults introduce ideas through planned activities, while play gives children opportunities to explore their interests. Topics change each half term and draw on books, with room for children’s interests to influence the learning.
Both outdoor and indoor provision support this approach. An Investigation Station and Junk Modelling Work Shop give children places to experiment and construct. The younger children’s role play area changes with class topics: examples include a post office, garden centre and café. These settings turn familiar experiences into opportunities for conversation and imaginative play.
For nursery children in FS1, counting activities use rhymes and little big maths. Dough disco and squiggle while you wriggle develop the movements needed for later writing; parachute and circle games practise attention and listening. Baking, outdoor learning and mobile library visits add different kinds of practical experience. FSU children have also visited Side Oven Bakery, exploring how bread moves from farming through milling to baking. That connects food with the work behind it.
In April 2025, early years children showed sustained attention, listened attentively and worked cooperatively. Routines began when children joined Nursery. Early years experiences included meeting police officers and collecting apples at a farm before making juice, bringing learning into contact with local people and places.
New starter visits and Stay and Play sessions give families opportunities to get acquainted with the setting. Communication includes class email, Marvellous Me updates and Reading Records, keeping parents connected with learning beyond the classroom.
Speech and language checks take place when children start, allowing support to respond to their needs. The FSU teacher also holds the SENCO role, linking early years teaching with coordination of special educational needs and disabilities support. Targeted interventions and involvement from external agencies form part of the early years approach when needed.
Attending Beeford’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the relevant deadline. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
The school office handles general enquiries on 01262 488444 or at beeford.primary@eastriding.gov.uk. SEND enquiries also go through the office to the SENCO.
Office hours are 8.30am to 4.00pm, Monday to Friday. The school timetable gives an 8.45am gate opening, 8.55am registration and 3.25pm home time for FSU children. These are the FSU timetable points; they should not be treated as a nursery session booking pattern.
The Foundation Stage Unit follows the EYFS, combining adult guidance with learning through play indoors and outdoors.
