Setting up an activity and clearing it away are part of learning here. Independence has a practical place in Brandesburton Primary School’s early years provision, alongside an emphasis on early reading and number work. The nursery forms part of the school’s early years provision.
The wider school occupies a Grade II listed building with school grounds. At the inspection on 24 and 25 April 2024, Ofsted judged early years provision Good. That judgement covers the school’s early years as a whole, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together learning to communicate, move confidently and build relationships with early literacy, maths, creative work and exploration of the world. Adults plan around individual children and review their learning. The point is to connect these skills rather than treat them as isolated subjects.
Read Write Inc gives Foundation Stage children a structured introduction to reading: recognising sounds, combining them into words and using books matched to their phonics knowledge. Early writing combines adult demonstrations, guided activities and opportunities to write independently. Books have a physical place too, with reading spaces in every classroom.
Maths follows Master the Curriculum principles in EYFS. Play, practical materials and adult teaching introduce counting, patterns, shapes and recognising small quantities without counting each item. Children explore ideas and talk about them before tackling more abstract concepts.
JIGSAW supports personal and emotional learning through stories, play, discussion and routines. Sharing, cooperating and recognising feelings are explicit parts of that work. Exploration also extends to the immediate surroundings through Understanding the World, while early art and design experiences develop practical skills.
In April 2024, early years activities and resources were chosen to suit children’s interests and needs. Children sustained their play together and took responsibility for preparing activities and putting things away. Those small tasks give independence something concrete to work on.
Lunch can be a cooked school meal or a packed lunch. Meals for FS1 carry a charge, with school dinners paid through ParentPay. Children should bring a freshly filled, named water bottle; families with food allergy concerns should speak to the office. This gives parents a choice of lunch arrangements and a clear contact for discussing food safety.
For SEND, the school describes an approach involving early identification, staged support and decisions made with families, involving external professionals where appropriate. Support needs. In April 2024, the school-wide inspection found that some pupils’ learning barriers were insufficiently understood and classroom activities were not consistently adjusted to their needs. Families should discuss how support will fit their child.
Learning about faiths. The same school-wide findings identified limited understanding of different religions and required broader teaching. This concern was about the school curriculum, rather than a separate nursery judgement.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority by its normal deadline. East Riding of Yorkshire Council coordinates admissions for this school; families living elsewhere apply through the council where they live. Treat this as a separate decision from choosing nursery care.

School uniform is encouraged, with red jumpers or sweatshirts, white or red shirts and grey or black bottoms. Steady School Wear supplies uniform, but families can buy suitable items elsewhere. A rail in the school foyer holds free second-hand uniform, giving families another practical option.
