Nursery at Gorseybrigg Primary School and Nursery

Story tents, sand and water play, and a writing shed give Gorseybrigg’s early years provision a practical, imaginative character. This is the nursery within Gorseybrigg Primary School and Nursery in Dronfield Woodhouse. Children can start in the term after turning three, subject to space. Capacity is 26 or 39 part-time places, depending on staffing and demand.
Books extend beyond story time. In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the learning framework for the youngest children, stories prompt drama, role play and dance. Children can take books home to enjoy together, giving families something concrete to share after a session.
Early writing grows out of activities with a purpose: making a shopping list, experimenting during sand and water play, or using the writing shed. Both adults and children initiate activities. That gives children opportunities to follow their ideas as well as join something an adult has planned.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is the early years phonics programme, adapted to the group’s needs. In April 2023, nursery children used games to practise recognising sounds within words. This is a small but useful distinction for parents: early reading begins with listening.
Creative work uses outdoor and indoor spaces. Children explore paint, collage and textiles alongside printing and three-dimensional making, so expression involves materials and movement as well as pencil work.
Additional support follows an assess, plan, do and review cycle. Parents contribute to Individual Education Plans, while teachers and SEND coordinators agree support and review it. Nursery children with an Education, Health and Care Plan can have it reviewed twice a year, allowing provision to be reconsidered as their needs change.
Teaching assistants, nursery nurses and higher level teaching assistants support children with SEND across the school according to need. The wider support network includes Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy. These are routes for addressing specific difficulties, rather than a promise that every child receives individual staffing.
Food is part of wraparound care. Breakfast club serves cereal or toast, with water or juice; the later club provides a drink and a snack, with options including vegetables, fruit and a small sandwich. Foundation Stage children are accompanied from breakfast club and handed to their teachers, giving the change between club and class a clear adult handover.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Derbyshire County Council. For September 2027 entry, the application deadline is 14 January 2027. Keep that application separate from the nursery booking.
For children with SEND, information about support, strategies and interventions passes to the next class teacher when they change year group. This helps the receiving staff understand existing arrangements; it does not secure admission.
Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoons run from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. The nursery lunch period falls between 11.45am and 12.15pm. These timings distinguish the teaching sessions from the midday interval when planning childcare.
Funded places cover up to five sessions each week, or 10 for children with a 30 hour code, with a minimum duration of nine hours. Nursery applications go directly to the school through an online form. For enquiries, email info@gorseybrigg.derbyshire.sch.uk or telephone 01246 418508.
Wraparound booking. Nursery spaces in the clubs are limited. Breakfast provision starts at 7.30am, and after-school care extends to 5.30pm. Bookings use ParentPay/Clubs in half-term blocks, with payment required before each half term and no refund for absence. Ask the school for current charges. The Friday replacement sports club is restricted to Reception through Year 6, so it should not be treated as nursery childcare.
